Back in the spring I had a sinus infection and I never really got over the congestion.

I got over the feeling sick part but for months now I wake up every day and have to hack up a bunch of congestion.

Is this something I'll just have to live with???

I've used several meds to include the RX meds the doc gave me.... I also took a round of antibiotics.

Have you tried a nasal kettle/neti pot?

Irrigate, irrigate, irrigate.  I prefer the Neilmed sinus rinse to a neti pot.  I've had sinus problems for 20 years, and irrigate twice a day, every day.  It helps immensely.

When I first came down with a severe sinus infection, I had to take antibiotics for six months.  It was that bad.  Blood flow to the sinuses is rather poor, infections can be very persistent.

I have in the past and though it seemed to help, it was kinda hard for me to use.

I'll have to look into Neilmed.

I could never get the hang of pouring water up my nose. I use the Neilmed squirt bottle every day.

Start using Xlear Nasal Spray (pronounced 'Clear') available at most health food stores. Active ingredient is Xylitol. Look it up on Google . . .

Keep using it. I had my nose broken when I was 20 and have a badly deviated septum. That has jacked my sinuses up and I get a bad infection about every 4 months or so it seems. I dont use my netti pot every day but when I feel one coming on I use it twice a day until I feel better. I get over them much quicker now without antibiotics.

Oh and if you smoke, quit.

Order a 2lb bag of Xylitol, add about 1.5 tsp to a cup and neti pot. Only thing that's worked for me. I've tried antibiotics and as soon as the antibiotics are done it comes right back. Gotta flush those boogers out.

Here's my exact procedure. I put about 1/3 cup water in the microwave for 30 seconds, then add the xylitol. This super heated water dissolves the xylitol much faster than warm water. Then after its dissolved (20 seconds), I add a dash of non-iodide salt (for ph balance), then add tap water until the temperature is right, then I neti pot. Well, I don't use a neti pot, I just suck the water out of the cup up into my nose and blow it back out. Works better than neti pot IMO. As weird as it sounds, it works very well. You'll see when the shit comes out.

Xylitol.

I used to have chonic sinus issues, where I used Afrin every day. I started using Xylitol nasal rinse (a teaspoon or so and a pack of nasal rinse powder mixed) and I have used Afrin once since March of this year.

I need to get around to ordering some Xylitol to use in my squirt bottle.  I have bad allergies, but don't irrigate as much as I should.  I usually just use the salt/baking soda stuff.

For chronic adult sinusitis, the Sanford Guide to microbial therapy basically says, 'go see a surgeon.' That being said, if you truly have a bacterial infection, sinus tissue is poorly penetrated by antibiotics. It would require as much as 3-4 weeks to 'eradicate' a real infection. The use of antibiotics targeting anaerobes is questionable, but occasionally valid.

Other considerations:

Do you smoke?
Pets?
Work/environment factors?
Asthma?

go see a maxillofacial specialist, i did and they did a quick sinus surgery and fixed me up . not been sick now for over a year and breath better . he said i has so much scared tissue from past infections and other issues that they had to clean and remove a bunch of tissue. insurance covered it.

Go see an allergist. Also an Ear, nose, & throat.  You need to find out if you have allergies or another sinus infection or both.

I used to smoke. Got bronchitis and sinus infections all the time. I don't smoke now and I don't get sick with respiratory stuff nearly as often. Smoking is nasty, stinky and expensive.

if you haven't been dealing with this for years, the surgery is premature. you may just need another round of antibiotics. go back to your doctor or an ENT specialist if you aren't satisfied.

If you took a round of antibiotics, your body's flora may be messed up. Make sure to take probiotics (not just acidphillious, make sure it has many strains). Also, may want to take something with Streptococcus Salivarius K12, a probiotic found in the mouth. I take Veglife Ear Nose and Throat shield. Some people also get oral thrush from antibiotics, check your tongue for white coating. This happens because the antibiotics kill the Strep k12 and the bad bacteria and fungus take over.

May consider asking your doctor for a blood test. You'll want CBC (complete blood count). This has white blood counts and you'll know if you're immune system is fighting something you don't know about. Immune system should be able to keep the staph in the nose at bay. The body's flora includes staphylococcus aureus, so something else may be going on.

I was referred to an ENT doc. He went in with a scope and said that it was like a forest with all the polyps in there.  I had surgery a few weeks later. I went from having constant infections to having MAYBE one a year.

First post nails it.

I had chronic sinus problems... and spent a whole Summer coughing and plugged-up.

Doctor's 'kept trying to treat the symptoms...  using inhalers, anti-biotics, decongestants, etc...

I stumbled onto nasal irrigation and haven't had sinus or allergy problems since. (Approx 3 years now).

Exactly what I use... but not regularly. I only use it when I feel a sore throat or sinus problem coming on.

When you guys had this surgery did they pack your sinuses with gauze?  If so, what was it like having it removed?  I've known a few people that went through that and it sounds horrendous.

I have never had a sinus problem in my life, I didn't even know what one was or how they effected people.
Then last year it started.  Now I live on zyrtec-D ..and netipot very other day or so. If I don't do these things, I have the worst pressure and migraine headaches.

I had a septoplasty in 94. the splint back then was a piece of plastic that was rolled up so it would fit in the nostril. When they took it out, well, remember that Schwartzenegger movie  Total Recall? when he pulled that round thing out of his nose? thats what it felt like when they took it out.

No, they don't.

It sucked. Mad ass. I woke up with gauze packed clear up between my eyes and a strip across the bottom to catch the overflow dripping out.

I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction. 3 days of percosets and then a follow up where they snipped the stiches I didnt even know were there holding the gauze to the little divider between my nostrils.

Then the pulling started. I thought they accidentally stitched it to my eyes and they were coming out with it.  Then, air. I could finally breathe through my nose. Something i couldn't do for years.

I blew a few thumb sized blood clots out in the shower and a week or two later I was golden. Well worth the pain.

I think the total was about $8k. I paid $200 out of pocket and $20 for the percosets.

Claritin-D (24 hour) + Flonase mist = cured my ass of all that crap....

FYI, I buy the generic of both.... the PITA of the "-D" stuff is they will only give you a 15 day supply at at time
b/c it's got pseudoephedrine in it (original Sudafed), and it's regulated b/c of the meth asshats.

I have a dog allergy that developed about 3 years ago, it got worse and worse until I started taking allergy
meds and got tested. My fat ass 120 lb yellow lab licking me, kissing me and snuggling with me all the
time finally caught up to me. Dammit.

The Claritin does the trick on all the classic allergy symptoms (itchy eyes, sneezing, hives... etc), but it doesn't
do SHIT for the jacked up sinuses. That's where the "-D" and the flonase take over and keep my nose and sinuses
clear. I will also admit that this combo has a nice side effect of de-railing the effects of colds. When I get a cold now,
the symptoms are about 10% as bad as the past 25 years. Hells yea... cold season? What friggin cold season?

Used to have serious sinus problems.

1. Cut 100% of dairy out my diet
2. Cut back hard on sugar (shits in everything though)
3. Drink tons of water
4. Sinus rinse
5. Colloidal Silver––take a few times a day

I noticed the largest change when i stopped dairy.

Careful with sinus pills and such, if you've got a family history of prostate problems they're a huge no-no.
