What's this I'm seeing on CNN?

Home DEpot telling all of it's stores it will no longer sell to the Fed. Gov't, and that it will no longer take commercial/business credit cards for purchases...something about this would make them have to comply with the Gov't's workplace discrimination laws or something?

Huh? What's this all about? Anyone know?

They are doing it because the Feds force any vendor to do lots of affirmative action crap.  Home Depot doe shave a sex discrimination problem, because they like to hire people who know about plumbing to work in the plumbing department, so they get few (no) qualified female applicants.

Oh, don't get me wrong; I'm not saying it's a bad thing at all. It's not often you run across a business (that's not a single-store mom-and-pop type place) that will take a stand, and make it policy...

I'm just trying to figure out why.

This will mean I'll havta shop for my brother, he's in the Navy...like I'm going to turn down a trip to the toy store [;)] Er, Home Depot, I meant...

They will probably still sell to individual service personnel.  If they are in civvies, how could HD tell anyway, if it is a personal purchase?

There is a good article here: http://home.post-dispatch.com/channel/pdweb.nsf/6e56f5328304fd5685256a0f005ed358/86256a0e0068fe5086256bda003602c6

It notes that, "The notification that Home Depot sent from its Atlanta headquarters to its stores offers little explanation of why the decision was made." But apparently, they fear having to comply with some anti-discrimination and affirmative action orders. Don't jump to conclusions on what that affirmative action is; one of the orders they object to requires "anyone doing business worth $25,000 or more with the federal government must take affirmative action to hire and to promote qualified targeted veterans...".

I figure Home Depot must have some significant concerns about these rules, because the federal govt is a very large customer. They are passing up a lot of $$$.

While being a gov't supplier adds some regulatory rules that must be followed and tracked, I do think this is due to a Home Depot lawyer making an error. Its one thing to be a "contracted supplier", and another for generic off the shelf purchases.
