So technically, its a stick right now. I picked it up for 5 bucks at auction so I have no money in it and I'd like to turn it back into a long bow cheap.
How do I figure out what length string to buy and where can I get a cheap string? |

Let me Google that for you!!!
Seriously though, I would recommend a flemish string. Regular bowstrings slip on my longbow. Flemish string won't. |

No AMO length listed on it? If not, probably the best way would be to temporarily string the bow. Use paracord or something similar. Shorten, or lengthen the string until the brace height is 6.5-7.5". For longbows, 7" is usually works pretty good. Once the brace height is at 7", measure the string between the limbs. That wont be the actual AMO length, but if you call a supplier, they should be able to figure it out. Unfortunately there is really no other way to figure AMO length based on the unstrung bow that I'm aware of.
ETA - Try "Three Rivers Archery". Very knowledgeable people. They should be able to help you out. |

Google? You're not serious are you? I posted the question here as a favor to the Arfcom bow nerds. So they could answer and demonstrate their knowledge of the merits of Flemish strings VS tampon strings and such. I kid. I tried google and at the first site I realized I needed a bit more info before shopping. I thought someone here might, might, know what I needed to know. Besides, I got up an hour early today and Sundays are slow on the forum.

Quoted: Is it really a "longbow" or is is a "recurve bow"? Any maker's name on it? It's a long bow, no maker's name. About 5' 6" long. It has one lamination at the grip and a leather wrap with an arrow rest. ETA: I can post a pic after work but is there an easy way to figure what length string?

Front or back of the grip? Sorry, newb here.

AMO length is a voodoo formula that comes from the manufacturers. When you buy a string, you buy it according to the AMO length. The AMO length will usually not correspond to any measurement on the bow - strung or unstrung. That is why I say it's a voodoo formula. If you call a supplier with the string length at an average brace height, they should be able to hook you up. By twisting the string you can usually adjust the length by about 1.5". So having the exact AMO isn't super critical. ETA - Based on the unstrung length of your bow, an AMO of 64" should be pretty close. |

This guide has got loads of info on tuning your bow (also known as Murray's guide):

You are going to serve the string, right?
It's about as easy to make strings for these random bows as to buy one. A board, some nails, dacron string, thread, and a little time is needed. First, you have to figure out the length to make the string. Be careful about over drawing wood bows. I had a hickory bow fail one day. The lower limb hit me in the jaw and make stars just as bright as a hard punch. If you are obsessed, or maybe possessed by an Olde Englishe Bowyer's ghost: Grow Your Own Bowstring .
