BELLPORT, N.Y.
The town is planning to install 16 sensors in the area of the Bellport train station. The devices are designed to help police pinpoint where and when gunshots are fired. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/10/26/town-to-install-bullet-tracking-technology-near-bellport-train-station/ The microphones are linked with GPS technology to triangulate the location and direction of the gunfire within feet and alerts officers directly in their patrol cars, bypassing the 911 system, which is key since sometime shootings are never reported to police http://www.longislandpress.com/2011/10/26/shotspotter-to-debut-in-huntington-station-bellport/

Might as well hire illegal immigrants to listen for gunshots and start pointing and shouting, "Someone joost got shot!!"
Yet another bullshit device to make stupid people "feel safer" and do nothing to prevent crime or keep criminals in jail... this just helps keep the recitivism rate up. Maybe.... |

Quoted: Quoted: They've had it for years in Hempstead on Long Island. Does it work? Seems like a waste of money. Yea, they are even used by our armed forces. Does it work, eh, all it does is tell you that someone fired off a gun in a certain area. Which if its already in an area where people don't talk to the police, will be somewhat useless. |

Let me guess, it sort of goes like this. [System Re]So the random shooting between three gang bangers occured on this corner according to our Techno Bullet System.[System Rep] [Patrol Officer]YeahI kind of figured that out, the wounded guy screaming for the "Amberlamps" and the corpse was the first clue to that solving that mystery.[Patrol Officer] |

Minneapolis got one about 4 years ago. Haven't heard much about it. They have a map so you can see all the shooting sounds.
Sounds like a monsterous pain in the butt for LEO. Wonder if they still respond to all these. http://www.minneapolismn.gov/police/crime-statistics/codefor/shotsfired.asp |

Shot spotter has been implemented all over Long Island, Queens, and Brooklyn for a few years now.
I've seen it at work. It helps cops respond faster to the scene of a shooting but does little to actually help them catch the shoooter. In the instance I witnessed the driver of a car fired several shots out of his window as he drove past. Cops were on the scene within 90 seconds but the shooter was long gone. No one got hurt. |

They've been able to dispatch based off that with much more precision, and have more than a few times actually caught people because of being able to triangulate where the incident actually happened. What I haven't figured out, is why these haven't been vandalized or destroyed in the high crime areas they were put up in. |

Maybe I'll drive around the first day it's operational with M-80's. It is my understanding they use the sound of the gunshot in conjunction with the sonic crack of it passing by the mics That would not be very effective in the average face-to-face shooting @ 8 feet - unless the microphone happens to be between the shooter & the target. It would also fail to detect subsonic bullets, so all you need is a 45acp... |

You want a medal or something?[Dispatcher] |

New York just keeps sounding better and better.
