My gf and I do. Works great, no complaints. Also have several friends who do also and they all seem to be happy with theirs. How long does a carbonator last? By how long I mean, how many bottles do you get out of one? Depends on how much CO2 you blast into each bottle of water. I have maybe a glass a day but my gf will drink several quarts of seltzer/day. We use the smaller size CO2 bottles which average about two weeks. |

Not a new thing for us Limeys...I remember them way back My aunt in Newbury had one when I was kid like 30 years ago. To be a bit more specific you can usually buy root beer extract and maybe a couple other soda flavors from the grocery store. More are available online. Read the package for instructions but you usually take a few tablespoons of extract, a cup or so of sugur, and a half teaspoon of champagne or bakers yeast and combine them in a clean bottle with water and wait couple days for the yeast to do their thing. When the bottle gets firm it is time to put the bottle in the fridge. The yeast will go dormant when it gets cold so your bottles don't burst. Champagne yeast costs like 50 cents per pack and should be enough for a few bottles. 2 liter soda bottles can be reused for this so there is no cost there. You could use the sodastream extracts, order some others, or even some fruit juice or cool-aid if you wanted to.
You may want to take a few extra steps to be safe. Measuring out and boiling the water, sugar, and extract together will prevent any natural yeast or bacteria from growing and throwing off your flavor. Just be sure to allow it to cool down to under 90 degrees before adding your yeast or you will kill it. Likewise, you can sanitize your bottles and a funnel in some bleach water. Filtered or spring water that doesn't have chlorine in it will produce the best results as far as flavor and it as far as yeast activity. Once the bottles are firm some people put them in the freezer for a half hour or so before putting them in the fridge to stop yeast activity ASAP. If you keep them warm for too long they can build up enough pressure to burst the bottles. |
