[ARCHIVED THREAD] - October 2011 GOP Primary Poll (Page 1 of 2)

I've been curious to see the ebb and flow of popular opinion on ARFCOM in regards to the GOP primaries, especially seeing how things surged and then receded with Bachmann and Perry here, with Cain now in the surge phase. So I'm going to do a monthly poll and see what the results are just to satisfy my own curiosity. So I ask ARFCOM's GOP members (or those not in the GOP that can vote and intend to vote in open primaries where applicable), if the GOP Presidential Primaries were held today, who would you vote for?
I would like to see a breakdown by State, so please post along with voting in the poll. Also post if you intend to vote for one of the minor candidates that are nobodies or intend to do a write-in (provided it is a real and living person who would qualify) or are undecided. The names on the poll are in random order, pulled out of an envelope. Personally, I'd vote for Gary Johnson if the election were held today. |

Last time McCain had won it by the time the primaries came to Texas. If I get a choice, and if he's still in it then I'll vote for Perry. When it came to California it was pretty much down to McCain and Romney. Needless to say that was very disappointing. My preference in the end was Duncan Hunter, when judged on the issues, although I had started with Ron Paul, moved to Fred Thompson when I realized what Ron Paul's foreign policy ideas were (for some reason I had only known his domestic policy ideas, which I strongly agreed with) and thought Thompson would also have what it took to win, and then went to Hunter when Thompson's campaign collapsed (as Hunter was the closest to my own views, followed by Tancredo). I don't recall who I voted for in the end, but it was either Hunter or McCain (I recall really not wanting Romney to win, so I think I voted for the latter). Unfortunately, the best candidate on the issues had the least charisma and following. |

Useless poll. Open primaries are going to guarantee that Libs are going to interfere and we get Romney as our nominee. Useless to you, perhaps. Anyhow, how many States actually have open primaries? 17 of them. Enough to raise Romney to the top. Number to the right is number of delegates. Alabama (50) Arizona (Semi-closed, with primaries open only to unaffiliated or unrepresented voters, except for the Libertarian primary.)(57) Arkansas (36) Georgia (75) Hawaii (Open primary for state, local, and congressional races; caucus system for presidential races.)(20) Idaho (32) Indiana (46) Massachusetts (All races' primaries open for "unenrolled"/unaffiliated voters only)(41) Michigan (59) Mississippi (37) Missouri (53) South Carolina (50) Tennessee (58) Texas (152) Vermont (17) Virginia (49) Wisconsin (42 |

Seems the Dems would have the manpower for an "Operation Chaos" since there is no contest in their primaries. I find it rather disturbing that there are that many open primaries. Primaries are and should remain a party matter. |

I voted for Cain in the poll but I completely agree that open primary states like Michigan will give us MilkToastMittens as the nominee... Michigan is a classic example of liberals crossing over and voting for the least conservative candidate, that's how Michigan got the liberal sell-out Rick Snyder as governor...

Sadly, it doesn't matter here in Montana. Our primaries are in June. The media has already selected the candidate by then. Well then, why have primaries at all? Romney is already their pick. I have faith the voters will pick the candidate, but only a little. |

I voted Michelle Bachmann I'm with you. I fail to understand how her campaign has self destructed so bad after a good start. She had a lot of talk but little substance (that seemed very clear to me when I first learned about her; she seemed like another politician trying to take advantage of the TPM for their own gain), which made her campaign a sort of house of cards that could be made to crumble (although this is true for most politicians); she didn't help herself by making false or stupid statements whenever she got in front of a camera or microphone. I think what really did her in, though, was Perry's entry to the race. I think a chunk of her supporters were just waiting for him to enter. He seems to have had a pre-existing base of support that was quite sizeable. You could even see it here on ARFCOM. Once he got in with strong support many jumped on the bandwagon at the expense of all of the other candidates, to include Bachmann. That Perry collapsed so dramatically and so quickly is quite amazing given the support he had at one point. Unfortunately for Bachmann, not much came back to her, so she now polls in the single digits like most of the candidates; I think even Huntsman and Gingrich were beating her in the polls for a time. |
