| I have a car with 45k on it and I have never had a oil test. Is this something I need to do and If so where would I get one done? |

Oil tests will tell you if you have bearing material, fuel, piston, ect. material in your oil, and will point to the cause and eventual failure of the part. This is popular with fleet vehicles, which see a lot of miles.
You can do it to your personal vehicle as well. I can't find the link to the lab, but I'd bet Google could.................. |

It will also tell you how much of the additive package is still working. Guys on the corvette forum have used them and found that good synthetics will go well past 10,000 miles. For them to be really effective, you need to test each oil change so it can reveal trends in the contaminants. ie: increasing amounts of certain metal particulates will indicate wear in specific areas.
