I have a car with 45k on it and I have never had a oil test. Is this something I need to do and If so where would I get one done?

45k and you've never changed the oil?

I thought the oil tests were done to see how far you could stretch the oil changes.

I have never heard of an oil test, so I've never had one done on any vehicle I own.

What is an "oil test" supposed to be testing for that can't be found by just changing the oil?

Oil tests will tell you if you have bearing material, fuel, piston, ect. material in your oil, and will point to the cause and eventual failure of the part. This is popular with fleet vehicles, which see a lot of miles.

You can do it to your personal vehicle as well. I can't find the link to the lab, but I'd bet Google could..................

There are several places out there that do oil analysis.
Blackstone Labs come to mind first off.

It will also tell you how much of the additive package is still working. Guys on the corvette forum have used them and found that good synthetics will go well past 10,000 miles.

For them to be really effective, you need to test each oil change so it can reveal trends in the contaminants. ie: increasing amounts of certain metal particulates will indicate wear in specific areas.

Oil Analysis.  People tend to do them on expensive engines, like ones in cranes, bulldozers, end loaders, earth movers, generators, etc.

What do you plan to do with this info on your car?

Thanks for the replies. I change the oil every 5k. I want to see if thier getting any unusual metal particulate in the oil mainly. I wouldn't mind changing it every 10 K also. Change the filter still after 5 k.
