Can somebody point me in the direction of a free background check site?

For legal reasions I cant say much but it has come to our attention that somebody who is linked to me finacially has a criminal history. I need to know what kind of felony that the person has.

I don't think a free website exists.

You can try your local clerk of the court. If you know their name and the county they committed the crime, you can look it up for free in some cases.

Why free?  If you are really concerned - put some money behind it.  If its not worth your money - its not worth worrying about.

FWIW - I don't think you can get anything for free.

Sometimes, if you know what court the conviction was in, you can find conviction and past docket records that can put you in the right direction. Many courts/ court systems have (at least some) information available online. Connecticut, for example, makes all conviction information available for 10 years on the Judicial Branch website. Some states, such as Kansas, also make very comprehensive information available through DOC listings.

Most federal court documents are available on PACER. If it you think there may have been a federal issue, send me the name, and I'll see what I can find.

I think IRB is cheap, but pretty dated in my not at all recent experience.

Not so much anymore. It's on a county by county basis and the one I am in now requires a full FOIA request.
