What is your opinion on them? Feel free to share some pictures or experiences. I had one several years back. 81 Grand Wagoneer. It was a beast. Built like a tank, but I got about 7-8mpg. Once on a camping trip a buddy was driving it about 30-35mph and hit a drainage ditch wide open in the middle of a pasture, it just kept going no worse for wear. I know that would have torn up any other truck I have ever had. I have regretted selling it and have tried to fill my 4x4 fever with a Wrangler and Grand Cherokee since then, but they just don't do the trick. I bought it for $700 and took it on a few camping/hunting trips over the 6 months or so that I had it, and then sold it for $900, never did put any money into it. It was a bitch to start on a cold morning, and the body was sitting crooked on the frame, but something about it was really appealing.
I have found two relatively local and am going to try and go look at them this weekend. One is a 79 and the other is an 87. Both Grand Wagoneers. Maybe one of them will come home with me. |

I love my White '85 Grand Wagoneer! http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee84/BuffaloPhil5/offroad/bigmedicine.jpg I grew up in a grand wagoneer, my father always towed our boat with an '86, and he still has 3 of them and I joined up and got one when I turned 21. Fuck MPGs, this is one of those vehicles that I don't care guzzles gas. I love driving it, plush leather interior, archaic everything, a vehicle of class. Haters gonna hate, I love em. Thats an awesome setup Phil. What are some of your specs? Lift, tires, ect. |

My father and I installed a 4.5" BDS suspension, tossed the trackbars and I came across a set of Super Swamper SSRs 33x12.5-15R for FREE.99. They are are used, but they came off a contractor's pickup truck and he said he didn't want them anymore when he put new SSRs on it. Other than that, the motor needed a new carburetor and it's running pretty mint right now. For offroad protection the few times I go, the front Dana 44 has a Ruff Stuff differential guard and the rear AMC-20 has a cast iron differential guard from BJ's Offroad. |

With the 4.5 inch lift did you have to get extended brake lines, or a drop pitman arm? What carb did you put on there? One of the ones I am looking at will definitely need one according to the current owner. |

One of the ones I am looking at will definitely need one according to the current owner. We did extend the brake lines a tad, just to be safe because the front sway bar was also removed. The pitman arm didn't need to be dropped, though, if I recall. The carb issue was one the previous owner made a FUBAR on; he installed a carb from a much earlier AMC360 without any electronic control plug in it because in the later years, the carbs had a sensor in them the computer could read, so the thing ran like shit because the jeep had no idea what the carb was doing. The correct carb was put on there and it runs a whole lot better. The only modifications to the motor we did was simply getting it run correctly with OEM parts. In fact, the motor was running so poorly, one trip around the block the engine was so starved for air, the EGR valve cracked off the block and the blowback soaked the entire air filter with motor oil. It was a disaster at first, but once we got the new carb, I was good to go. If the carb is all shitted up, just remove it and have it cleaned or just replace it, but make sure you do it right off the bat or else it will be problems from the get-go. Also, check the Rear Main Seal on the motor, they tend to go back and leak oil. Replacing it isn't that bad, but it's just preventative maintenance. |

Nice ride! Here's mine...a work in progress. Also did the Rhino grille, no pics of that yet though. http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o276/azsnakeman/005-4.jpg http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o276/azsnakeman/002-3.jpg And a buddy's J-10 and Cherokee trophy truck http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o276/azsnakeman/004-7.jpg I've had a J10, Wagoneer, and a Cherokee. The Cherokee Chief was my favorite. With the 401 engine 400 hydro and Quadratrac the gas mileage pretty much sucked but it went everywhere. I would love to get a look at that red white and blue Cherokee......looks to be a 79. Finding a good rust free restoration project might be a good time. They are good vehicles that have few weaknesses, the looks do grow on you. |

If you're looking for parts commonality it is easy to drop in a Chevy engine with a little bit of motor mount work and a new tranny bellhousing. |

My first car at 16 was my 78' Cherokee Chief and I still have it many years down the road. In high school I added a 5" lift and 35" mudders and drove the crap out of it. Then in 97' i completely rebuilt it from the ground up.
http://www.davidallenracing.com/DSCF1303.jpg http://www.davidallenracing.com/DSCF1304.jpg Started by pulling the old tired 360 and dropped in a built 401 pushing 450hp. Reworked all the suspension with custom stuff to get around 8" of lift and a ton of flex and the ability to fully stuff without the 35' boggers rubbing. Then I had a Tera 60 built for the rear adding rear discs and a Detriot Locker and keeping the 6 bolt wheel pattern so I could keep the 15" wheels I already had. Then chopped the top and added a full cage and a custom made soft top that has removable sides and rear. This is my play vehicle now and the family and I take it on trips usually to the Michigan's U.P. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5-_GxLotmM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzslFGyB7Ag&feature=related Older video clips from climbing the stairs at Marblehead on Drummond Island. Then when I got into military vehicles I had to pick up the ultimate FSJ, a 67' M715 http://www.davidallenracing.com/DSC04291.jpg |

Yes it is. He built it himself, including the stout 401. He's a great guy and did well with it. It was in JP magazine too...maybe even on the cover. It was mine in it's stock form, didn't look anything like that! lol Delta...love the M715!! |
