Internet is running slow, really slow, and I can't figure out why. Everything on the network is running really slow: The PC, the Laptop, and the XBox connection sucks. Whenever I load up a website, half the pictures won't load and the format often looks only half loaded. Half the time the pages won't load at all. I've run Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security, and McAfee... All show nada, and all have the most recent definitions. I'm not sure where to go from here. So what do I need to be looking for? Any suggestions? Obviously my computer fu is too weak to figure it out without guidance... |

Quoted: Is your wifi secure? Neighbors may be downloading porn on your signal. Its not "open" and is password protected... So yeah, it should be I think. Also, I get alot of "Connection Reset" errors as well as occasional messages saying "Your computer sent an unknown request" messages. Also it just seems to time out or just sit there crunching forever on some sights... ..Heck it has taken me three tries just to get this reply to go through Oh and rebooting everything (router modem and computer) had no effect. |

It needs to be WPA or WPA2 with a random password like QaZ64Gc3Lkew3N. If your password is GoSteelers you're gonna get fucked. WEP is broken. Everybody needs to stop using WEP. /publicserviceannouncement |

Is everything wireless? If it's just the wireless devices slow, download netstumbler and check to see if your neighbors are on the same channel as you, could cause slowness and disconnects\reconnects. I changed mine, was better for a while, but problem returned Bought a new router and everything is flying So buy a new router...I guess ![]() |

Assuming all your machines are slow, that mostly eliminates individual computer problems on any one of them, barring a massive infection which I doubt. So it sounds like a networking issue. First, isolate things. Take everything out of the loop, plug your laptop directly into your router (or cable modem if possible) and do an online speed test. Make sure you're getting what you expect. If not, I assume you already tried but reboot your cable/DSL modem. After that - you might be able to connect to your cable modem if it's like most (http://192.168.100.1, often, and yes that's probably different than your usual LAN private IP subnet) and see if you have a bad signal. If so, call cable co. If you decide it's _not_ your cable modem or router, then "fuck it, wipe hands on pants" (surely I'm not the only person that's seen this on like 9/10 hand dryers in men's restrooms)? |

Quoted: I haven't run it from a safe-boot... I guess that should be the next step. When was the last time you ran Malwarebytes from a safe-boot? It sounds like someone else is running stuff on your box. How much memory do you have in there? And how old is it? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

If your Xbox, laptop, and pc are all slow, try turning on only one of these at a time and see if the connection improves. Check that the router isn't running WEP for wifi. It should be running WPA2. Try turning off wireless at the router and running the pc or laptop with a wired connection. Last call the cable / dsl provider and ask them to loop your modem and test the connection. |

Checking your user manual, it looks like you have some logging capabilities that will show incoming/outgoing traffic. I would recommend disconnecting all devices from the network except the one you are going to use to watch the connection (turn off as much stuff from this one as possible, ie no bit torrents, etc) and see if there are any neighbors who know how to crack wireless passwords. If you are using WEP, the strength of your password may be moot.
If no one else is using your bandwidth and it's still slow, my money would be on one of two things: bad DNS lookups or physical hardware problems. DNS: Try going to websites based off of their IP instead of their domain name. If you need help here, please ask. If your connection speed seems faster, try using a free DNS server instead of the one your ISP recommends. Google has some nice ones which are easy to remember (8.8.8.8). For help on doing this, consult your user manual/Google and if that doesn't work, post back. Hardware problems: I'd first try talking with your neighbors. My street had a bad port on one of the ISP's switches so everyone on my street was seeing greatly reduced bandwidth. They came out, moved some things around and my connection speed got much better. If no one else is having problems, try contacting your ISP and wait between 0800-1600 for them to call at 1550 to cancel on you, sorry, a bit sour. They will instantly try to blame your equipment, so it would be great if you could test your Cisco at a friend's place to ensure that it is not the problem. Best of luck. |
