You sure you want a backpack for travel baggage?  While I realize they are gaining acceptance, I am having a very hard time finding backpacks as proper business apparel.  Aside from mere appearance issues, the backpack straps are going to cause unsightly wrinkles in your suit jacket.

I think you would be better off with a nice 20" suitcase with an exterior pocket so you can whip out your laptop when you have to go through security at the airport.

If you don't want to look like you're packing, buy something from LowePro.  Lots of nice little compartments, and people will, if anything, think that you are a photographer.

Despite my having probably more backpacks than everyone else who posts in this thread combined, I agree, if you are travelling for work a hard side case will keep clothes from being wrinkled, unlike a pack.

If it fits you well, I really like the Kelty Redwing 50.  Not sure if it has a dedicated "laptop pocket", but you could get a sleeve.

I've had a Blackhawk Three Day Assault pack for some time that I'm very happy with.

I've been even more happy with it because I got it very gently used on Ebay for about half the price of a new one.

You mean the SATL? http://www.mysteryranch.com/military/assault-patrol-packs/satl-assault-pack

One of the few I don't have  It would be somewhat nondescript in foliage. I have a couple of Mystery Ranch packs, nice stuff

Oakley Icon MSRP is around 150 though. It does have a laptop storage pocket, has two large compartments for clothing. Also has smaller outer pockets for misc gear.

Unless your dress code is VERY casual, get a small suitcase, or you'll look like a wrinkled mess and/or will be ironing all the time.

It has a hydration compartment which fits my Dell Latitude E6510.  I use it all the time.

Agreed.  However, I don't know of any hard side (meaning polymer or metal) 20" rollers which have a large enough exterior pocket for a laptop.    I am a big fan of hard side cases because I often travel with my hiking/climbing gear and I don't want my carbon fiber hiking poles to get bent or broken while being handled by the TSA gorillas. If I am carrying a laptop I need something I can remove in a hurry in order to clear security so I end up taking a briefcase with a pass-through pocket on the back and latch it onto the handles of my roller.  It would be nice if I could get both (in ar15.com fashion) in one package.

(The Zero Halliburton 22" polymer roller has a nice little "hatch" built into the back so you can stash your keys, cell phone (no smartphones) and other small items inside for clearing metal detectors.  I wish they made it bigger to fit smartphones and larger items –– and I wish Zero gear was less expensive).

This pack has a padded laptop compartment in the lid and some pretty decent internal organization. I have one in ACU (it was cheap).  I wouldn't have any problem using it for a weekend trip, it does look pretty tactical-ish even in black, I suspect.

My wife brought a pair of hiking poles to the airport without thinking it through and they did not break down enough to fit in either of our packs. She had them wrap tape around them and taped them to the handle on the bag my pack was in, I didn't believe it but they made it to Switzerland and back without a scratch.

I have been using an Eagle AIII 3 day backpack for going on 10 years.  I got mine in black and have used it hunting, as an airline carry on, overnight trips etc.  Great bag and I think I got my $80 worth!

Thanks guys for all the suggestions and keep them coming.

For clarity the bag would be primarily for travel, 2 or 3 days of travel, to work and not exactly worried about clothes being wrinkled or business attire
Majority of my personal effects stays here and this would be just for travel a few days at a time.  Just looking to replace the bag I'm using now (5.11 COVRT 18)

If you aren't too concerned about price (I didn't see that you were), I recommend Kifaru.  They are expensive, but they are worth every penny, from my experience.  I own a tent and packs from them and everything is made with painstaking attention to detail.  They don't use anything but the absolute best quality products, and if you did ever happen to have a failure, they are superb to deal with.

If you're looking for "not too tactical you can go with their hunting line which lacks all the webbing or go with the Express from their tactical line.  Express might be a bit small, but I really love mine.

You might also want to look at the Kelty Map 3500.  This is rumored to be a favorite of Navy Seals and other special forces.

I spent three weeks living out of my Mystery Ranch SATL hopping around Afganistan.  Very comfortable and user friendly.

Not a huge pack, but bigger than a typical 3 day pack.  If you need to extend your load, you can attach stuff sacks to the top and bottom.

I have been very happy with my packs from Granite Gear and Mountain Smith.  You could look at Duluth pack as well.  Not tactical, more hiker/camper style.
