Device Manager only lists USB It doesn't mention a version. Would that mean 1st generation USB?

Not necessarily. What is the make\model number of your computer, I'll look it up for you.

You do realize that they are backward compatible, just that you won't get the extra speed if you are running 2.0 device on a 1.0 port, or 3.0 on a lower #.0 port?

My pleasure.

FWIW you can go HERE and enter you Dell Service Tag (that's the 7-8 alpha-numeric code on the sticker on the bottom) and get all of the info you ever wanted on your, very specific, laptop. You can also download the latest drivers and utilities for it at the same spot. If you're so inclined.

I know very little about computers. I asked the sales person if USB 3 was backwards compatible to USB 1. He said he didn't think so. He checked with someone else they didn't think so either.
