A couple mornings ago, I stepped out of bed, and felt a sharp pain in the ball of my right foot. The pain in more centralized on top of the foot, about 2 inches behind the fourth toe. At this point, it's become almost unbearable. I usually get this pain a couple times a year, but this time is far worse.

Any ideas what it might be?

External appearance is normal, as far as I can tell.

Moving the 4th and 5th little piggies causes more pain.

Yeah I used to have the exact same thing. The pain is unreal I can not even describe it. I was just told it was dehydration so I started drinking more and it has not happened in over a year. I do not know if that was really the cause or not.

Could be either metatarsalgia or a neuroma.  Not sure what the procedure is for the former but for the latter they will probably give you a cortizone injection.  I had a bad neuroma for several years and it reached a fever pitch last year.  Injections only relieved it temporarily and then it always came back with a vengeance.  I finally had enough and told my foot doc to surgically remove it.  My only regret is that I didn't have the damn thing ripped out of my foot years ago.  The injections and orthotics were nothing but time wasting nonsense, at least for me.

Go to a podiatrist, get diagnosed and then decide which route you want to take.

Might be plantar fasciaitis or some kind of muscle cramp.  A few things that might help... extra water, a calcium supplement before bed, and take a minute before you get out of bed to stretch your toes and feet.

There's a condition that causes this kind of pain. There's a nerve between the metatarsals of the 3rd and 4th toes that gets inflamed, and causes such a pain. I'm just getting over it; doc cured it with 2 shots of cortisone. (If you've never had a cortisone shot, you have an experience awaiting you.)

It's called a neuroma.

Souns like plantar fasciaitis. Roll your foot over a frozen bottle of water a couple times a day, get arch supports and lose weight, if that applies to you.

I've had multiple issues with plantar fasciitis, and this sounds nothing like plantar fasciitis.

sounds like the gout.
Get a bottle of cider vinegar, have a spoonful every morning, and use it exclusive as salad dressing.
Find some tart cherry extract, take one or two a day..
.try to consume a LOT of water everyday, keep that uric acid from crystallizing in your low parts.

Same deal started 2 weeks ago and it getting out of control.  It pounds without moving or touching it.  No injuries, slighly swollen, hurts with movement and really painful to touch.  The wife and I are RNs and we are clueless.  Time to see a doc.

I have gout.  I'm 37 and my doctors all comment that I am abnormally young to suffer from gout.

Yep, the getting up in the morning with a sharp pain is normally a good indicator.

I'm voting for PF too....

OP, try a cheap set of supportive insoles. I just tried a set for $6 to see if they would make a difference before I took the advice of the Dr. Scholls custom fit orthodics at $50 a pop, they are already making a just difference in pain in the mornings.

Try the super feet inserts, they are better than the custom inserts the Podiatrist made for me.

Generally yes, but can still occur.  Go to the doc and have your uric acid levels tested.

I had a injection for that nueroma last year, It surprised me how little the actual injection hurt. But I was one of the lucky few who has a reaction an hour later.
Severe pain, to the point of causing cold sweats and nausea.

What the hell is going on? Yesterday my big toe started hurting. Can't bend it up or down and hurts like a mother to walk on. It's like the knuckle or something is jamed up but I haven't hit anything.

Well today my toe feels a little better but my calf feels like a huge knot in it. When you take a step and your foot moves to your backside and the toe points up it hurts like hell. The joint on my big toe does not hurt as bad today.

Guess I'll see what happens tonight/tomorrow.
