The utopian society gets eaten by cannibals. Only the man with the gun can save them. How is it socialist?

Oh, it's a fun movie, made quite an impression on me as a child.  Yes, H.G. Wells was a socialist, more the old school type, though.

Yvette Mimieux was a kitten and a half in that movie, too.

Get Mark Steyn's book, After America.

He uses The Time Machine to illustrate visiting and comparing different periods of our history, and especially uses the Eloi and Morlocks to describe certain portions of our society.

Very insightful writing.

And i thought he was saying that a hippy eutopia woukd soon be eaten by the strong. I thought he was preaching against letting yourself fall to that low of a level.

and their looks held up so well

Wells was one of the orginal Fabian Socialists along with GB SHAW and Sanger. his message was NEVER man can do for himself, it was almost always what the Collective could do for man.

the orginal works are quoted often in this version of the movie as best I remember,,

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the Morlocks.

The Eloi were just sheep for the slaughter.

You do realize the Morlocks had to breed, don't you?  That means Morlock women ...................................................

I saw it as a kid, and it really made an impression on me.

To this day, I like the score, and the stop-motion stuff.

As far as being socialist, it is no worse (and often better) than the drivel coming out of Hollyweird today.

The part that bothered me most about that movie as a kid, was at the end when the housekeeper turns out the lights in the downstairs front room, and two seconds later is turning out the lights upstairs.
She fast.
