Coons keep getting on my back porch, what's the best way to chase them off?

Have-a-heart trap and a trash can full of water. this Better be well reinforced. A coon will tear those traps apart in short order. LC ETA: I am surprised I don't have a coon problem here. I live out in the countryside and see them dead on the road frequently, but have never had any here. Now, possums and armadillos are another story. |

I've caught several raccoons in havaheart traps and the traps were never damaged. We have coons here but they never seem to come too close to the house. Don't leave dog or cat food, or any type of food for that matter, outside, secure the lid to your garbage can. If they can't eat they will leave. |

Dog woke me up one night barking, and I found a racoon had torn the screen on the screen porch to get to the dog food. A shotgun blast later I had a dead racoon, and thoughts on if it was legal to shoot the racoon since there is a hunting season for them in Kansas. Being the law abiding person that I am, I carried the coon to the edge of the road and "staged" and accident scene, poor criiter must have gotten ran over... ETA: and it looks like I didn't make it before this thread started going downhill....... |

There are two or more grades of traps, and they will destroy the cheapo ones pretty quick. I bought one of the "better" models at around $30 to trap a skunk (still with no success) and caught a raccoon instead. It damaged the trap but nothing that couldn't be bent back into shape. It injured itself trying to get out, so I just shot it and buried it. The trash can full of water is OK for city folk, but it's much more humane to just put a round of .22LR though its head. |

Offer them a job. Quoted before the edit.
ETA: Seems like they're coming out in droves. Good bait job, OP. Yeah, he's full of it. Coons will work. And they will work hard. I had a pair of them dis-assemble my corn feeder timer trying to get a the corn. Batteries, timer, and door all laying on the ground with the wires chewed in half. Never underestimate the work ethic of a coon if food is involved. |
