Twice in the past couple of weeks I have tried to use small battery-operated devices that I've had around for years, and found that the batteries in them had corroded and ruined the devices in question. One was a multimeter and the other a flashlight.

My wife and I are now on a mission to gather up all of our SBODs (small battery-operated devices), remove the batteries and somehow package the batteries with the devices rather than IN the devices.

Yeah.  I have a refrigerant leak detector that was fuxxored pretty bad by leaking batteries.  Sucks.

Good point.

Thanks for the reminder.

I felt like a complete jackass when I found that I had let my multimeter die of neglect, when I damned well know better.

Yeah, one day I realized that all of my Duracell AAs decided to shit themselves.

I guess these things happen.

Major battery companies will cover the cost of a replacement or repair of devices damaged by battery corrosion.

Here's the contact info for Duracell and Rayovac: http://www.streamlight.com/Support/alakline-damage.aspx

I've personally done this for a Maglight and a Dorcy flashlight. Called them up, they took down my information and sent me a check and a prepaid mailer to send the lights back, along with a coupon for free batteries.

Duracells are (unfortunately) widely counterfeited.  It is possible you had fake batteries that were not even alkaline.

Can you spot the fake one in this photo:

If you are under 12 then here's what you do.  Take all the dead batteries out of your toys.  Put them into the drawer with all of dad's fresh batteries.  They actually recharge if you put them with fresh batteries.

I'm switching over to Sanyo eneloop (rechargeable NiMH) for everything AA & AAA powered.

FWIW, DMM's (even good ones, lighlty used Flukes etc) are dirt cheap on eBay.

I just recently experienced the same disappointment with Duracell's in my mini Maglite.

I sent Duracell an email and heard back within 24hrs.  They apologized & asked how much was a replacement.  I replied and sent them a link for a local Ace Hardware - $11.97 + 6% sales tax.

The next morning, I received another msg, again apologizing and they said they would have a check in the mail for $12.69 + coupons for up to 8 new AA Duracell batteries.

Much to my pleasant surprise, I had a check & the coupons in the mailbox within 6 days.

No, but if I handled it, I probably could...

Alkalines weigh more than carbon-zincs.

I'd guess that the ones with the fake Energizer bunny on Duracell packaging are fake.
