I'm looking to get a Hi-Power handgun for target shooting and home defense and I have a $600 limit.

Which version of the Hi-Power would give me the most bang for my buck?

If you're limit is $600, get a complete copy FEG or a well used Browning model.
There is also a Arcus "clone" being made now.

With some patience, I'd bet you could find a nice used Browning (or FN).

I've been looking at some FEG Hi-Powers, heard mixed reviews on them though.  The older ones tend to be better I'm told.  This website has been pretty helpful.

Stephen Camp's Hi Powers and Handguns has a ton of good information.  He died earlier this year and it's not clear how long that site will exist.

It's a great site. Hopefully the information will be saved and kept alive somewhere.

I actually think the older FEGs are better guns than the newer Portuguese Brownings. If it matters to you,the bluing on them is fantastic.

There are plenty of cheap ones but beware of what you're getting,as it often isn't what you think. MANY of the Israeli HPs brought in are actually FEG frames, for example.

check the EE.
there have been a few on there lately, some of which were pretty nice. one was a matte-nickeled Practical model, which would fit your target/defensive idea.

Great stuff.  Hadn't seen that site before, thanks!

I had a practical model. Half stainless, half blue. Money got really tight and I sold it. 2nd dumbest thing I ever did.

Keep looking for a local deal.  Hi-Powers are popular on internet forums, but sit on shelves at dealers.  You should be able to get an excellent/like new MKIII for a little over $500.

For a point of reference, CDNN was selling NIB FN MKIII Hi-Powers for $399 for several years.

Don't bother with an FEG/C-D/FM unless its less than $300.

Agree on this.

Wish I would have really taken advantage when the FNs were $399. Have one of them and its my carry gun.

I've looked around from time to time to pick up another, and I've seen some pretty nice examples on local classifieds for in the $500 range for used.
