In the opening minutes on the beach trying to open up (Dog 1) they are getting destroyed by the Germans on the cliffs above them. What Machine guns were they Germans using?

I only remember 42's.  They have a distinctive look and sound.

Plus, they are a HOOT to shoot.  We cut an old car in HALF with one, back when 8mm was dirt cheap.

The one thing that bothered the hell out of me is one or two of the camera shots from the machine gun nest perspective, round impacts were random as shit.

This but I read that they had to tone down the landing scenes so the carnage would be watchable by John Q. Civilian.

The only good 15 minutes of the movie before it gets into total crap story line and tactics.

Oh lets charge a machine gun until they have to change the barrel then we get them? WhoTF thought that up? Lets not use our sniper, lets be targets.

Just stop the movie after the Normandy landing and you will be better off.

They carried either two or four spares, I think.  The barrel containers hold two.  They would swap every couple of hundred rounds.

They had the XM8 with the optional machine gun barrel that had the nifty built in bipod legs, and a shitload of C-mags.

Honestly though, my battalion was on omaha beach, and it pisses me off every time I see that scene, that with 2 years of planning the best thing they could come up with is a fucking frontal assault, on a fucking beach, with fucking cliffs.

"Hey they're just infantry, we can spare a few thousand LOL"

EDIT to clarify: I wasn't in the BN then,

The MG34s and 42s they were using were incapable of cycling through the blank ammunition at the correct speed so their guns were much less disturbingly deadly than they really were. If the 42s had been able to use the blank ammo correctly they'd have buzzed in ways that would make the French Army extras shit themselves.

They originally filmed the scenes with everyone armed with radios, but when they remembered there were pictures and footage from the actual landings floating around thanks to the internet, Spielberg grudgingly had them CGI the radios into firearms.

I was bothered by the GI's dying underwater from 8mm rounds.  They were too deep for the bullets to penetrate the water and then two human bodies.
