I found 2 bugs in the house that I was holding out hope were grasshoppers, but after looking at some pictures of roaches, I think they may be German cockroaches (they were tan in color).

Thing is, they didn't behave like I thought roaches behave.  They were just sitting still: one on a wall, one on the floor.  one in a bedroom, the other in a hallway (opposite side of the house from the kitchen).  They were out in the light (thought they are dark-loving and scatter from the light).  When I killed them, they were kinda soft (thought roaches were crunchy).

If it helps narrow things down, I am in NYS.  It has been warm and humid here, raining a lot lately.  We live in a private home in good housekeeping.  If they are roaches, the might have hitched a ride home in a work bag (work in NYC) but really, I am pretty good about limiting exposure (bag usually stays in the car, I usually keep it zipped up tight).

Thoughts?

They can lay eggs in your ear canal.

Just how many times do we have to tell you guys with bug problems to 'Take off and nuke the site from orbit; it's the only way to be sure'?

Are you an exterminator?  You must realize  with kids and pets, clearning the house out for a couple days is a though proposition.  And how can I push a panic button if the possiblitiy exists that a couple crickets found there way into the house?

If I find another, I will certainly do so.  Right now, the 2 I found are gone.

Call an exterminator; problem solved.  Roaches, crickets, grasshoppers, whatever.... doesn't matter.  There's bugs in the house,  take care of the situation

Okay, need to know:  Are roaches always crunchy when you squash them?  These 2 bugs were soft.

The one that hitched a ride to my house from the grocery store was soft.  It had been locked up a LOOONGG time in a box of Indian food. (From NYC.)

Crunch is not a reliable indicator of species, only of that individual bug.

Chances are though, if you thought they were roaches, they were roaches.  Crickets have big rear legs that stick out to the side, roaches do not.

They may have been sick already, did one of your neighbors spray?  That might be why they were in the open.  There are a couple of species of roaches that are NOT light-fearing so you have that going for you.

if they are german cockroaches, you're in for one hell of an infestation. they're the nasty ones that tend to infest. they usually are smaller than the larger outdoor roaches, and tend to like to hide in dark, cool places. be proactive about getting rid of those guys, or it can really cause you problems.

There is another species of roach called a vega or field roach that are very similar in looks to German roaches.  The German's call German roaches French roaches.

So, I called an exterminator.  He asked where I saw them and told me "Many people mistake outside critters for roaches.  Capture a sample and I'll come right by.  I can't just spray and bait roaches like ants and mice. They are very particular depending on type (if it even is roaches) and specific as to where to treat for them."

Thing is, I haven't seen any other than the 2 over the past 3 days. I am sort of hoping it isn't roaches and that I will never see another in the house.  But, until I see one, get it checked and treated if necessary, I will feel like my house is a ticking time bomb with these motherfuckers hiding out.
