I am thinking about buying a tablet. WiFi only. 10.1" screen only. No apple products.

Right now it's between the inexpensive Acer, toshiba, and samsung.

As far as I understand, all these run the Android system like my phone.

I want to be able to stream netflix as well as surf the internet. Basically it's just a fun entertainment toy.

Would these tablets be able to download email just like my phone where it does not interfere with my computer and phone getting copies of the emails?

Of the three choices, do any of them have a edge on processor speed?

I will not be putting a lot of stuff on them so I don't need bigger than 16 gb.

Which one is thinner and lighter?

I'll be heading out to shop for these later today so any input is really appreciated.

I can't vouch for their tablets but I am typing on a 5 year old Toshiba that just won't quit.  I have never had a laptop last this long.  My 13 year old has also dropped it down the stairs where it slammed into a wall.

I bought the Acer for my wife. It works great. It is very portable. Acer has been around longer than most and they make hardware for Dell, IBM, Gateways. For the cash strapped this is a great buy.

I bought the Blue Tooth keyboard also. It works great also. It is a dual core proccessor. It does do all syncing with email/calander like your phone. It has a removalble memory (micro) card. It has a full

size USB 2.0 that will support larger hard drives. The larger hardrives now come with USB 2.0 & USB 3.1 cords. The 3.1 allows for the lower amperage of the tablet to power the hardrive. Use the

2.0 with regular Laptops or desktops. It also has a mini USB input. The only complaint is the power cord is extremely short. Flawless access to Andriod store.

Hope this helps!

I have a Xoom so I can't  comment on those models.  But, on the other questions  regarding tablets running honeycomb.   Email works just like your phone.  Just make sure you tell the mail program to leave it on the server if using pop3 mail and you can still get them on your phone and computer.  As for Netflix  I don't think its officially out for any of those tablets.  However,  you can download the apk and it works decent.  I watch Netflix at work during lunchtime several times a week.  Occasionally it crashes but still works decent.  Can't wait for official Netflix and hulu apps.

It seems likely, from what little I've read, that someone will figure out how to port Android over to it.  The Touchpad running Honeycomb would be a nice Tab.

I wonder why you couldn't just go on to the netflix website and stream it just like a computer?

The Acer has a nice thin profile and all the options I want, except for gps. I don't see that it has provisions for it. The samsung and Toshiba do.

The samsung seems like the way to go, but it has no inputs on it at all. I am kind of bummed. I would have to get it hooked up to my laptop via bluetooth to transfer files. I don't know how hard that is.

I have read about the GPS for this. In fact I believe it has it( I think I remeber seeing an icon for it). But everything online sts that ALL tablet GPS are slow and intermittant. But everyones tablet may vary.

When I went to buy it, I was going for the Toshiba, But the clerk told me they are the heaviest and the most behind the times. Take it for what you will.

The gps would have to be on board since its WiFi only. I believe the Samsung is. It's the thinnest and lightest as well.

I have no beef with Samsung. They are great with all the electronics I have ever used from them. It would be a great tablet. Blutooth is easy to sync. I just like ports for my harddrives since many of my other electronics don't have bluetooth. Then again the iPad has no ports and it is the best selling tablet for now.

I'm waffling between the Xoom & the Tab - want something with good build quality (mostly to keep in the car) and heart the Mot was good in that department - is it messed up in that or other areas?

ETA: don't want it for games, basically want a larger display for the car that I can tether the HTC Evo to and be able to read it without Geezer goggles.

Dumb question.

Why does this tablet not show the instant message window for FB on facebook's website? Is there something I have to download? I use the instant messenger quite a bit. My phone can do it, but my tablet can't? None of the apps I looked at seem to support it either. They all seem to suck ass too.

Also, Netflix is a no go on this tablet. I am kind of bummed. I always have my computer for that so it's not a huge lose.

I set up an Amazon account so I could down load books. I snagged a half dozen free books just to have something around. Now to find a couple good titles by Hazlit and Von Mises to buy.

So far this thing fails at two of the more basic things I wanted it to do, but it kicks ass as a web browser.

One more thing I would like to find. A GPS app that will download maps onto the tablet so it can run as a stand alone GPS like my garmin. This would be an app. I would not mind paying for. I travel the whole US, so I don't know how big those maps are, but I have 32 gb to play with since I spent the big bucks.

I recently bought a Toshiba Thrive.  What appealed to me is the wide variety of ports it has....usb, full size hdmi, full size sd cards.  Plus Wifi, bluetooth, gps. User replaceable battery. I like it a lot.

Why no Apple?

I just bought an iPad2- 32GB, WiFi. I haven't had a chance to explore it too much, but I'm happy with it so far.

I forgot to mention. The bluetooth file transfer was a no go too. I don't think they play well together.....

When I get home I will try useing the usb connector to transfer files. I don't think I will have too much trouble getting it to work.

For now this looks useful, but it does not replace my computer by any means.

It was slooooowwwww

No Netflix etc.

I am running a 64mb ipad2 now.  It is jail broken and other than the utter bs of not having flash, I am extremely satisfied with it's capabilities.

I just recently got my toshiba thrive, and wouldn't have anything else.  I like how I can take the chips out of my deer cams, and pop them into the full size sd card reader and review everything on them right there on the spot.  No lugging some special viewer into the woods.  And, I can store maps on it and look at them even if I'm deep into the woods.

The clerk was full of shit. Hardware wise, Toshibas are the same as the other tablet (processor, ram,. etc). Yes, they are a little heavier and thicker but, that's because they have full sized usb, SDHC and HDMI ports. Unlike all of the other tablets, the Thrive also has a user replaceable battery. For me, this out weighed the slight increase in weight. Unlike people that have other tablets, I don't have to go out and buy other adapters to add functionality. That's one less piece of crap I have to carry with me.

As far as being behind the times, maybe he was referring to the fact that the Thrive is still using Honeycomb 3.1 instead of 3.2. Toshiba will be rolling out 3.2 fairly soon so it doesn't really matter. I doubt most users would even know the difference between the updates.

All of that said, I am not pushing the Thrive on anyone. Get the tablet that suites your needs. I personnaly think the Samsung has the best screen of all of the Android tablets. I was interested in the Asus first but, when I played with one at BB, I thought the quality was a little lacking. I never gave the Acer any serious consideration just from experience with their laptops.
