Juvenile rat snake was my guess too.  He was sitting on my front porch tonight as I walked out.  He was at the back of the first step.  I was really close to stepping on him.  In the dark, they all look poisonous.

I didn't kill it.  I saw a racer in the yard earlier today.  It is still alive too.  Although, both are getting drenched now with all the rain outside.

What part of NC did you find it in?

It doesn't look like it has they black band across its face like a normal black rat, but I don't think gray rats are in NC are they?

Maybe a black/yellow intergrade?

They are in the Carolinas along the coast.

ETA- my memory is off.  That just about has to be a black rat or black/yellow rat.
