In light of the aTm shit I find myself coming back to this very question. Why do we continue to use this stupid system dictated by opinion and hype? What benefit does this offer over a playoff system? I'm thinking none.

Son, if you don't realize how much the NCAA makes in sports, the conferences make, and the bowls make... well you got lots to learn! It's all about the money. We're talking billions here. Yup, with the 'b.' I have no doubt you are right, but I still dont get it. NCAA basketball has a playoff system, and with all the hype around " March Madness " I would be shocked if college basketball does not make as much if not more money than college football, yet they do not have any sort of playoff system. |

Yup, with the 'b.' A 16-team playoff could bring in even more money than the current BCS system and the current bowl system wouldn't even have to be completely scrapped in order to make it happen. There could still be bowl games but most of them (for all practical purposes anyway) would take on an almost N.I.T.-ish quality. The very best teams would get a playoff spot (which could still incorporate the top 4 to 8 bowls) whereas all the lesser teams who failed to qualify for a playoff spot––––but still had a winning record––––could still be rewarded with a traditional post-season bowl. This way, everybody still wins. The fans would get an honest-to-goodness, genuine, college football playoff system to determine a national champion and the bowl system (and all of the money that is associated with them) would still get to exists as well. The bowl system wouldn't be eliminated––––it would just get tweaked a little bit so as to allow for a national championship playoff. |

The current BCS system is set up to reward the head coaches and AD's, and by extension all teams in that conference. A playoff system would hurt their paychecks. They are the ones that vote on the bowl setup so it will not change. The major conferences have too much to lose if they allow a playoff and non conference teams to have a shot at winning.. |
