What's the word on the S&W 586? Local shop has a used one in what appears to be good shape for $375. |

I've had a 686 for 20something years now. They're great revolvers. Concur. Fine weapons an that is a fairly good price as long as it still locks up tight. Oh, and 586-?. Most have a number after the designation. What is the number on the gun in question? |

Way back when, S&W had a real problem of selling blued guns because SS was the rage. Everyone wanted a SS gun because of the easy caring. Even though S&W charged more for their SS guns, but I bet they didn't cost them any more. It was just that people were willing to pay the extra bucks for a SS gun.
I would buy it. |

Just called. It's a 586 no dash, former service revolver. The shop is going to send me some more pics, but I told them, depending on the pics, consider it sold. Run, don't walk to the store and finger fuck it. If it locks up tight or even fairly tight buy it and don't look back. Hurry now and get back so we can have an update with pics. |

Wow barrel is kind of long for a service gun. I would imagine that a 4"bbl is probably the max.

That's what he said. Carried by a local cop |

That's what he said. Carried by a local cop For a 586 that is a long barrel for a service gun. But six inch service revolvers were standard in many police departments before 1970. But his model did not come out until the 80s. It is a great price for one. Most here go for north of 500 dollars. |

I've got a -4 that I bought from Tickers about 7 months ago. Beautiful gun. Shoots great too. Everybody who sees it, wants it in the worst way. http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/ArmaNotSoLite/DSC_0506.jpg Hey there it is. |

Clearly been carried a lot. Based on the condition of the side plate screws somebody has been inside that thing. That may or may not be good; I would be a little suspicious of an amatuer trigger job. Examine carefully. Check the timing. Make sure the you can't push the hammer forward when its cocked.
I would still rate it as a buy, depending on inspection. But not quite the steal I originally thought. |

Blued 686 No such thing. But both the 586 and 686 are great revolvers, assuming you find one in the finish and barrel length you like best. Bullshit Limited run of blued stainless, 4", round butt 686 revolvers were made for U.S. Customs in 1986 or 87 |

Nickel no dash. This pic doesn't do it justice. Less than 200 rounds though it. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e338/70satvert/IMGP2340.jpg I hate you. |

Here is the one pic he had available: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/RichP1269/DSC02064.jpg I have 586 just like the one in the pic but in a bit better shape. I paid $525 about a year ago for it. I would buy that one in a heartbeat for $375! |

They were actually blackened - not blued. They had a matte finish instead of the more traditional high luster blue we associate with the 586 - I purchased an unfired one several years ago... S&W only made 5000 in 1989... Yeah, I didn't want to go into all the semantics. Never say never. Like they never made the Browning Superposed in 24 guage,,, |

Good looking gun. I can't make out the case hardening on the hammer and trigger. Sometimes it doesn't show much, other times it's worn off from handling. Check to see if the other side shows a little more color. Someone removed the front screw on the sideplate and used the wrong screwdriver to do it. This is sometimes done because the bearing surface between the crane and the frame is dirty, or to disassemble the cylinder for cleaning. Check the lock up. Cock it and drop the hammer on each cylinder, then make sure that the cylinder will only move a couple hundredths of an inch with the hammer down on each chamber. Also check for push-off. Cock the hammer and see if you can push it forward with your thumb. If you can, somebody screwed with the sear and the repair will not be cheap.
Ask the seller if he can remove the grip so you can see the back screw on the sideplate. If it is also boogered. somebody did some home gunsmithing on the gun and you may have to have it fixed. Check the screw at the base of the grip frame. It's a set screw that presses on the hammer spring to create tension. If the gun has an incredible trigger and doesn't push off, someone may have loosened this screw. If so, it should be tightened. The screw is supposed to be seated. It looks like it's probably a good deal as long as it hasn't been screwed up by a previous owner. I love mine. |

I looked long and hard for any sign of a blued 686 before I stumbled upon a blued 586 a few years ago! |
