thanks,

Parable of the Laborers

Mark 10:31

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them,
‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went.
5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.
6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing 1idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’
7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard,
2and whatever is right you will receive.’

8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages,
beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius.
10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius.
11 And when they had received it, they 3complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour,
and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said,
‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way.
I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 aIs it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or bis your eye evil because I am good?’
16 cSo the last will be first, and the first last. dFor 4many are called, but few chosen.”

Salvation through Jesus is equally available to all, whether an 80 year-old man who served the Lord all his life, or an 80 year-old man who sinned all his life then repented.

To me it means fuck unions.  The employer made an agreement with the employees, but they got pissed that others got a better rate.

The Kingdom of Heaven, or Salvation, or Enlightenment, or God...is a constant. Some will work hard and long to reach it and feel that their way is more "deserving", but the outcome for all who search is eventually the same.

Disclaimer:

This is my personal interpretation; I did not read that anywhere.

I realize many Christians may not agree w/ it and I am not arguing that I am right

Matthew 20 not Mark....

You cannot EARN salvation and all of us are sinners.  Your works cannot buy your salvation, only the grace of God.

I like the 10 talents parable better. Master gives 3 servants 5, 2 and 1 talent (money) respectively. Servants with 5 and 2 work hard and double their money. Master rewards them with more responsibility. Loser servant with 1 talent buries it. Master condemns him and gives his talent to the servant with 10. Capitalism at its finest. Take from those who can't and give to those who will.

It means that you are dealing with the person who makes the deals...not what other people got.

It means if you will work for $5 an hour, and then find that others are getting $10 an hour, you have no right to bitch.

The talents always belonged to the master.  He took his own property back and gave it to someone who would grow it.

I always liked the double meaning.  The parable talks about currency that is called "talents", but that in English we have talents (skills, abilities, etc.) that we are to use in God's service.

David Barton (wall builders, praised by many ecg's on this site) equates it to minimum wage and why there should not be one.   It is only one of his distortions and falsehoods.

It's not a double meaning.  The word "talent" as in skill or gift comes from this parable.

LOL-  It means what has been mentioned about Salvation, and the Lord.  It is not meant to be a parable about fair labor laws and/or unions and/or dealing with the dealmaker...

I think it's also a warning to Christians not to be arrogant in salvation.  Those who hard worked long and hard (for what they had agreed to at the time) were angered that others who had made a deal with their employer (representing the Lord in this case) got the same amount of money (i.e. salvation).   It's a warning against the thoughts of "save this person because I like him but don't save that person, cause I don't".  Read about Jonah's response to the repentance of the Ninevite's.  They had been facing destruction for wickedness, but turned away after being warned.  Jonah was mad they weren't going to be destroyed.  He forgot that there is more joy in a lost sheep being found than in 99 who have never been lost.

But that is in there also.  If the basic truth is used to teach a larger spiritual one, the basic truth must be, well..., true.

If you get what you thought was good, you have no reason to complain if someone gets more generous treatment.  Simple.

It was largely to teach the Jews not to complain about the Gentiles coming into the covenant of grace.  They had been "God's People" so long they thought the Gentiles did not deserve God's grace.

God graciously offers salvation to all who believe in His Son and the power of his sacrifice on the Cross. Being saved is not a matter of how many good things a person does.

The parable comes in response to Peter asking what his reward will be for following Jesus. Jesus is telling him (and us) - do not try to impress others or feel superior about doing good works.

This is correct.

Your scripture address is wrong.  It is Matthew 20.

The key words are found in the 14th verse.

Matthew 20:14  Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

"I will give..."  That is the key.  Salvation is a gift, freely given, not earned in any way.

And we cannot say "I deserve it more, as I worked longer" or anything like that.

It is a Gift.  Jesus paid it all.

Since there are no free markets today, let's apply today to your scenario.  Once bankrupt and repossessed the foolish servant would appeal to the local social welfare office and be given by the government free food and housing, all paid for by the state through taxing the capital gains and labors of the productive servants.

I searched for that video and watched it.  Huckabee does indeed speak highly of David Burton.  But he doesn't say anything about "minimum wage".  No Christians that I know of support the minimum wage as a Biblical doctrine.
