Muzzleloaders are surprisingly forgiving with black powder, you almost can't over load one. I've seen cases where people loaded a charge on top of another charge and shot it.. Lots of recoil, no problems other than that. You can put two round balls on top of each other and as long as they are tightly packed it shouldn't explode. Airspace is the death of a ML, you don't ever want room between powder and ball.



Savage made some ML's designed for smokeless powder IIRC. Seem to recall a few blown up ones from people pushing the limits.
