Local grocery store has frozen 1 pound fillets of tailmeat. Is it one of those things that's only good cut into strips, breaded and deepfried(the only recipe I have seen) or would it be good if I just took the whole piece and grilled it? Probably going to buy some but want to know how I'm going to cook it first.

I had some 'gator' at a resturant the other day...it was cooked up like 'calf fries'(nuts)..cut up in chunks battered and deep fried.

Lightly bread, fry until golden.  Serve with lemons (drizzle a bit of lemon juice over each piece).

Enjoy with your favorite beverage.

Heaven.

That's the recipe I see the most often. I'd rather grill than fry, but if it tastes lousy on the grill, looks like deep frying time.

Grilled gator can be done, but it really does need to be kept wet while grilling with whatever sauce you want.  Get a pound and fry half.  Then grill half kabob style.  You'll know by the time you're done what you prefer.

Best way to eat alligator, IMO.

I had it battered and fried, and it was good.

Best way I've had them was served up like nuggets from a southern style restaurant. That said, I have had pretty good luck marinating them in teryaki sauce and throwing them on a grill.

If you wanna grill it cover it in butter and blackened seasoning, grill till done.  Dip in a creamy horesradish or butter garlic sauce, thank me later.

Whatever you do, CUT OFF ALL THE FAT!!!! It tastes like fish purée.

I soak the trimmed gator meat in milk overnight. I usually add a dash of hot sauce to the milk.

Season the chunks and bread it in pancake mix before deep frying.

Out of curiosity how much are they selling the meat for? I hunt gators and take my kills to a commercial processor. I pay a skinning fee to keep the hide and then buy back as much meat as I care to eat. The processor charges less for 5# packs than he does for 2.5# packs, but either way it's ~$2.50 per #. I get the head back for free :)

And before someone calls me a pussy for not processing out my gators at home, have you ever skinned a gator? It is a pain in the ass. I hunt with a few taxidermists and we ALL pay to have our gators processed. :)

Best thing to do is soak it in buttermilk for a night and then deep fry it!

$12.99/pound. Expensive, but we don't have huntable gators in IA.

This is a interesting cooincidence.  We were at store in Dublin CA that was selling 1# packs of cubed alligator meat for $5.99.

We bought one package and were wondering what to do with it.
