How fucking huge is the house to have four AC units!? I figured I'd get some of this response, since apparently a large house shouldn't be allowed. The house was built for 6 people, in a city that gets 100+ degree summers with near 100% humidity. Currently 4 people live there, the AC is usually set to keep the house at 80-85 degrees to maintain it. Since most of the trouble of installing a standby generator would be logistics, installation, and maintenance, I'd like to set up for overkill. I'm not planning on keeping my parents' house at 68F for weeks on end should a hurricane come through. FYI, I'm planning on getting a professional installation done, but since I'm not a licensed (or unlicensed) electrician, I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible before we pay large amounts of money to a 3rd party. I'd prefer not to do that blindly. Arfcommers tend to know a lot of shit collectively, if you can sort through implied socialist crap like this, and I'd like to get some information from an unbiased 3rd party. |

Unless you get a company that specifically wires in generators to buildings on the grid, avoid it if you can. People get cheap, hire any old electrician and think they are g2g until things go tits up or someone gets killed. Are they living in some sort of 70,000 sqft mansion or something? ![]() |

I want one for my House. I would get at least a 20kw. It will switch an entire 200 amp panel. I don't like the idea of running all the 17 circuit crap back and forth.
I think you need something bigger. You obviously wouldn't be able to run everything at the same time. You keep your house a hell of lot hotter than I could stand it. Heck I could keep my house 80-85 degrees and hardly ever run the on the AC. |
| my work recently got a natural gas generator installed. i believe the office is wired up on two different breakers and the generator only powers half of the building. perhaps you could see if something like this is an option if a big generator for the entire house isn't feasible. |
