I hurt myself due to sleep deprivation...

OK, back in March my Grandmother had a severe stroke. She was not expected to live, so the family set up 24 hour watches so she wouldn't go alone. I was picked for the night crew. For the few days she was alive, I stayed with her from 6PM to 9AM. On day 3 of this period, I was awakened from a sound sleep by my wife, due to a rattlesnake in the front yard. (2+ Acre yard) My kids were riding their horses and saw it. My Son used his cell phone to call. I jumped out of bed after 2-3 hours of sleep, grab the 10-22, and head out.

This damn snake knew every move in the book to avoid getting killed. I shot once at him on the move, and only motivated him to crawl faster. He went for my brick pile (leftover bricks from building the house) by the front gate. Being delirious from lack of sleep and grief for my Grandmother, I sent a "kill kick" at him as he was going into a gap in the brick pile. I miss, he's more alert than me (less than 5 minutes of being awake) and kick the fucking brick pile at KILL speed wearing nothing but flip-flops..... Dumbest thing I have done since my first wife . I am pretty sure I broke the toe, it is still crooked. Doesn't hurt anymore, but my damn toe nail is coming loose. It tilts like a see-saw when messed with. I know it's a goner, just wish the part of my toe that is still hanging on would let it go.

The things I said after kicking the brick pile should be a solar system wide COC violation. IT FUCKING HURT...

Of course, I needed retribution. I peeked up into the gap and saw Mr. Rattlesnake stacked into the gap, ready for combat.

Stupid or not, (it was) I stuck the 10-22 barrel into the gap and fired 10-15 rounds into said snake.

He didn't make it....

Grandmother died the next morning at 6:18AM, as I was holding her hand. She fought all the way, and I feel bad that I was limping around and hurting as she was dying....

Stupid mistake. Here is a pic to prove said stupidity:

The whitish part is still hanging on... Wish it would quit. I think the new toe nail is pushing up under it.

Guess I should man-up, and tear it off with pliers. I might need a few beers to do that, however..

What's new in your corner of the world?

I had an ammo can with 2ea 20rd 20mm Flak 38 Magazines fall on my big toe once....just once.

It hurt so F-ing bad, I couldn't sleep for the toe having its own pulse....

Heating a needled took too f-ing long, hurt like hell pushing on it.

I finally got my handy Dremel Tool out, with a sanding drum, and little by little, sanded the toenail, between fits of pain from vibration, until it was thin enough to lance with a needle.

And when I did, that black f-ing blood hit the ceiling.

Darn toe felt better.....

Is your fourth toe from India?

That nail is nasty but you should probably get that melanoma checked out.

I dunno. I sternly asked it, and it said:" Hindi-pop is the greatest."

So, maybe.....

Thanks for the concern. I recently went to a melanoma specialist, he said that the coloration of my moles was consistent across the board. If I wanted, he could set me up with appointments to take biopsy samples for testing.

I declined.

Your not gonna like this, but it must be done.

Go to your toolbox... get your pliers and a small punch.

You will need a sock or something between your teeth, and maybe do a couple shots first.

and don't forget the "after" pic.

Godspeed..... son.

OK, I get the pliers.... But what do I do with the "Small punch"?

A drillbit works much easier.  Simply get a medium size drill bit and drill a hole into the toenail.  It will allow the blood to escape thus relieving pressure and saving the nail.

Won't work since he did it in march.  I smashed a thumbnail a few years ago and ended up running a nail file over the surface.  The parts the were detached came off, and the stuff that wasn't stayed.  It wasn't pretty, but it was less uncomfortable.

I tried that once.  As the bit went through the other side of the nail, it "grabbed", and the bit shot right down into my finger, underneath my nail.

Yes, choice words werds were uttered.

Going after a rattle snake...and kicking at it...with flip-flops?  You're damn lucky that you only injured your toe.

Seriously...flip-flops while dealing with a rattlesnake?

This is Texas. A Rattlesnake is kinda like your toilet won't flush up in the great state of Misery.

Common. Also, these aren't Pine rattlers, they are just plain old western diamond backs. When I was 15, I caught a 6'9" diamondback. By hand. I held his head underwater for at least 30 minutes. (Wanted to save the hide without bullet holes, big bucks from buyers) When I brought him out, knowing he was dead, the fucker spun and bit me on the palm of my right hand . That is a sight to see. Dead snake came alive, while I'm doing the herp-derp

Still have marks on my hand from that incident. The venom hurts, but is not very dangerous unless you are allergic to venomous stings. I'm not, so dealt with my hand swelling up, hurting like hell, and feeling like general crap for awhile. This was back in the mid '80's, if it happened to my son he would go to the emergency room ASAP.

Too late for that. This nail is coming off. Wish I had known about these methods, but I was too involved with my Grandmother's death to care, at the time...

Now, I just wish it would go ahead and fall off. It's dead, no reason to stretch it out.
