Both computers are pretty well loaded with RAM and fast processors.  Using speedtest.net, the laptop is downloading at 3 mbps, the desktop, only 2.

Troubleshoot this for me, please.

What kind of consumer-level shit router/switch/AP/modem are you using out of curiosity?

I'm a little jaded.

My ancient Linksys has fits with my PS3.

What do you recommend as a home router?

FWIW, my PS3 is wired and I would not be opposed to a separate access point.

Also, any experience with Tomato?  I could always load that on my existing router.

not sure, but I've had similar things happen where one computer was being favored over another in bandwidth. In my case it was my laptop (wireless) over a desktop (wired).
What I do know is that the routers can only handle so many connections so your laptop could be saturating your router with more shit it can handle, leaving your desktop fighting for attention. My problems were associated with torrents, I believe, that ate up a lot of connections.

Try a different browser.

If you have an extra network card laying around, install it on the desktop to see if there's any change.
