In addition to being a gun nut of course, I am also a model enthusiast (aircraft and tanks mostly).

I was poking around on the Internet last week looking at dioramas and companies that sell supplies for making them.

I found a website for a company in Ontario that had something I was looking for, and although I have never purchased anything from them before, I decided to give them a shot.

I figured it wouldn't take too long to get something from the other side of Lake Erie.

I called their 800 number to make sure they had what I wanted in stock, and the guy said yes.  I told him I would place my order on-line later on that evening, which I did.

Then I waited.

And waited.

Finally, several days later, I e-mailed them and asked them for status on shipping.

Got the reply back:

"Your order is ready for shipping, but the Canadian postal system is going on strike and we don't know for how long."

I told them to go ahead and send it Fedex International Ground.

Socialism, what's not to love, right?

The postal system is really messed up there.  It usually takes several days to get a letter from Cleveland to Toronto.

Postal strikes are nothing new up there either.

And since they're on strike they're drinking milk from jugs.

You want your head to explode?  I was home visiting many years ago and dropped by the Canadian post office to get some stamps to mail letters back to the U.S.  Here is what happened:

Post Office:  Can I help you?

Me:  I'd like two stamps to mail letters to the U.S.  How much are they?

Post Office: 50 cents each.  So that comes to $1.15.

Me:  I'll just take two of them <slides a Loonie across the table>

Post Office:  No, it's a $1.15.

Me:  But I thought you said they were 50 cents each?

Post Office:
Yes, 50 cents each is $1 plus 15% sales tax.

Me:

They don't deliver mail on Saturdays either.

A couple of differences between the Canadian and US system.

First"  We don't get mail on weekends.  It saves allot of money.

Second:  It is not illegal in Canada to deliver flyers yourself (or hire an outside source to do it) and put it in someone's box.

It saves who a lot of money?  Mailing a letter here is cheaper than in Canada and there is Saturday delivery.  So we get more service for less money.

The USPS also fucking sucks donkey balls when it comes to anything. I'd used UPS or Fedex before I'd use the USPS.

The USPS lost one of my NFA Stamps, a Black Powder Rifle, and a S&W 4006TSW.

The S&W sat at their Hialeah Sorting for thirty days because someone simply put it under a desk. The Black Powder was sent to the wrong address.... except the label was correct. My stamp was simply destroyed by the idiot at USPS; had to file a case with USPS Inspectors and had to deal with BATFE on that one.

There have  been calls to privatize Canada Post, but at the moment it is still a Crown Corporation (owned by the government).

I think the tax only applies if you buy your stamps "to go" . Hand the clerk your letters and ask her for stamps to mail right there, there is no tax. At least that's what I remember from the very rare occasion I go to the PO.

PO boxes are very expensive: I got a small one when I first moved here, $15 per month. My PO box in Michigan still runs me $20 per six months. Oh, when you move, you have to pay to have your mail forwarded: something like $8.95 per month.

UPS and Fedex are no better, your luck with them has just been better.

I've seen UPS guys do shit that would get an equatorial african a tire full of gas around the neck.  I thought Fedex was better until our latest change in delivery folks.  Our new Fedex guy is tits on a boar.  I've always had pretty good luck with USPS, but that's just how my throws of the dice went.

They're all good depending on what you're shipping.  You certainly can't mail a letter cheaper than you can with USPS.  I've never had a single letter not get to its destination, ever.  But UPS/Fedex you can ship ammo/guns.

Yeah with some experiences like that i'd probably be sore about the usps too. like any organization, they have their own share of idiots and assholes.

if its really important, you can have something shipped certified mail.
