Stupid.
It's getting to the point where a family can't really afford to do things like this together. Instead of being a part of the normal routine, it gets to be a treat if it can be afforded in the budget. SI did a report on how it cost an average family of four about $500 to attend a football game. |

It was about $40 for the five in our family to go. Then we get popcorn and soda. Another $40.
That was the matinee. We all get our own sodas but share the popcorn. Sure we could do without the snacks but it is part of the in theater movie experience. I would rather give up going altogether if they make so expensive that we cannot afford snacks. eta- And not the 3D version.

Quoted: I seen the hangover 2 for $4.75 I also watched my buddy drop 10 bucks for a medium popcorn and a medium drink. The candy/pop counter is the real scam. They should be ashamed of those prices!! Last time I took my family (four of us) we spent almost $35 on soda, popcorn, and candy alone!! |

I am lucky, we have a Drive-in nearby, the tickets are up a little this year, I think it is $6 for adults, and $4 for kids, the entire family is about $25, but with two of three being teenagers we usually have one at a friends or family members house visiting. The concession stand is fairly reasonable too, Pop Corn is about $4 for a large sack, $4.50 get you the souvenir cup that gets $1 refills all summer. You also get to see two movies as well, Weekend before last we saw Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and Thor.
If we take the small car the entire evening is about $40, if we take the minivan it is about $50, taking into account the extra gas. We could get away even cheaper by avoiding the concession stand altogether, they allow you to bring your own food and drinks in. As odd as it sounds this drive-in theater is doing very well, they spent a fortune reopening it in 2000, it has been closed for years, and when they reopened it they only had a single screen, a few years ago they opened a second screen, and this year a third. I know they sell out a few times season, year before last they sold out both screens three nights in a row on Memorial Day weekend. |

We live in a small town that I grew up in. Known someone that worked at the cinema since I was 12 or so. From the time I was 12, to the time I was 23, I don't think I spent $5 at that place, whether it be movies, concessions or video rentals.
The wife and I went to a much nicer threater this weekend (where we generally go now) and for the 2 of us for a movie and snacks it was $36. Sweet mother of grape juice! |

Someone with *real* numbers ought to show up here soon..(4...3...2...)
But, Once Upon A Time, 90% of the gate for the first two weeks of a movie went to the studio. Not the theater owner. So-to stay in business-costs somewhere else had to rise. And that, ladies & gentlemen (and the rest of youse) is why you pay $4.50 for 23ยข of soda. Now that we have superchains, I don't know if they negotiate better deals, or not. But we are still getting hosed. (And when I first looked at the picture, I keyed in on "FU PANDA" first. hmmmm) |

You should have gone to the 2D movie and saved at least $8. And not have to wear stupid glasses. And not have to worry about getting popcorn smudges on said stupid glasses. And watch a movie in full brightness. I hate 3D. I can't find any 3D images to post on here. |

This is why I have a 55" 1080p TV and home theater set up.
Plus I don't have to listen to the locusts munching their grains. (Yes, I fucking hate popcorn.) I see a movie out maybe once every two or three years, and then I'm reminded why I don't do it more often. |
