Blood and ashes, these books are long.  I'm starting the third one. Anyone else read it?

Yes, I started reading the series when I was in high school.

The books are VERY good untill about 6 or 7..then they get tedious. It picks back up again around book 9. I stopped reading at that point because I am waiting for the WHOLE series to be finished, then Iam going to re-read the whole thing.

The last books are being finished by another author because  Robert Jordin died a few years back.

I started the series so long ago...

The first book I "waited" for was Dragon Reborn.

My girlfriend got me into it. She has the logo tattooed on her back. When the most recent book came out, she read all 900+ pages in two days.

They are good books.

I've been reading science fiction and fantasy for for 47 years.

The first book in the series is REALLY good.

They very slowly go downhill after that.

I got about halfway through the 4th book, before I gave up.

NOTHING WAS HAPPENING, for hundreds of pages.

I know that some people really like the books, but they are just Way. Too. Long.

Too many subplots too. By Knife of dreams he could hardly get more than a couple paragraphs in before moving on to the next subplot.

I've read them all and couldn't put them down.  Can't wait for Brandon Sanderson to finish the series.

I've also read pretty much all of Brandon Sanderson's works as well.

I stopped my first series read through on book 7, just got angry with too many subplots.

Re-read 1-6 then went all the way to book 11, waited for 12 and 13.

I enjoy them now.

I've read all of them. Brandon is doing an EXCELLENT job finishing up the series. Don't quit, it gets better.

yes, but Sanderson is doing a great job at wrapping it up

would be nice to finish a series that I started 15 or so years ago

About 15 years ago - can not recall much of anything about it anymore - other than the author was adding to the series and I would forget most of what I had read before the next book came out.

I got through book 8, I think, before losing interest.  Jordan was still introducing characters and plot lines, and it was getting so convoluted I was having a hard time enjoying it when he had to skip to another storyline every 4 or 5 pages.  Now that the series is complete looking like it will actually be finished I might give it another chance.  Light at the end of the tunnel and all.

I am on book 2 right now. There is a humor to the story that I am really enjoying.

agreed.  things seemed to bottom out around 7, but then jordan actually seemed to listen to the fans and the writing quality started to improve.  sanderson has a monstrous job trying to close out all the major plots in only 3 volumes, and i think he's doing an admirable job.  my only complaint is that there's a lack of dramatic momentum right now, but that's a function of mechanics.  what i'm hoping is that his first two installments were deliberately episodic and choppy so that he'll have room to breathe in the final book.

Brandon Sanderson has started his own series, the Stormlight Archive.  Well worth a read... but we have to wait maybe two years for the next one

sweet fucking jesus on a pogo stick those are some long ass dry books. I really enjoy the series, but I think the furthest I have made it is book 9 or so. I am waiting until the series is done before I make my third assault on the series.

I'm on book 8 right now.  Its true, books 6, 7 and 8 have gotten tedious at times, but I'm still enjoying them.  It is hard, because he has introduced literally hundreds of characters, some with very similar names, and they are spread out throughout this huge world he's created, so its hard to remember who everyone is and where they are.  And if you can't handle annoying female characters, don't read this series - I want to take Nynaeve, cut off her braids, and duct tape her mouth shut.

+1

I loved the series, but felt that Jordan started rambling and getting off track in the later books - but Brandon is really pulling everything together in a fantastic way.

I feel terrible for thinking it, but Jordan dying was unfortunately the best thing that happened to the series.

I got all the way to Book 11, and then Robert Jordan passed away and I wandered away from them. Recently, after (finally) finishing the Dune cycle, I picked up book 12 and went back to read book 11 to get back into the swing of it–– my God, the storylines are complicated! I should be done with book 11 in two or three months, and then on to the new stuff. On the whole, I found Charlaine Harris' "Sookie Stackhouse" stuff to be every bit as entertaining, and a lot less tedious to read–– it's like reading textbooks–– but I've been enjoying it anyway.

been reading for a long time.

my take is almost all authors are good for 3 books in a series. depending on how large they are. beyond 3 they seem to loose purpose and wander. even rr martin's a feast for crows, the 4th book in the fire and ice story seem to loose energy, and its taken him for ever to finish the 5th book due out in july.

authors seem to get lost in  new subplots, new characters and wander away for the original premiss. Winter is coming for martin's book, and its been what 15 or so years? and still winter is coming (but not here yet). and i consider martin tier 1 with no other authors as good as him. his stuff is better than tolkien in my opinion.

wheel of time is a good example, first 3 or 4 books were good, then the whole thing devolved into a tangled series of subplots and characters.

brian sanderson has done a pretty good job with picking up the series. i have starting reading them again ,starting with his writings. the middle n books i will never read.

I read them. Have been since 1992.

He doesn't get women right. Moraine is by far and away the most believable female character...maybe Cadsuane.

Read the entire series up until the last book probably four or five times. Every time a new one would come out, I'd have to re-read the whole thing to reacquaint myself with everyone and everything. Great books!

I read a sci-fi or fantasy book a week but I couldnt get past book six or so of the wheel of time. I just think he is/was a horrible author. Tons of worthless shit over and over. The main story plot was pretty cool but other that you can have it.

Atlas Shrugged was easier to read but I've got too much time invested to give up now.

Exactly what I am doing.  I have been reading these goddamn things for 20 years.  When the SOB died I just muttered "figures" and rolled my eyes.  I will wait until the new douche finishes them all and read them from the start.  The first 6 are incredible, some of the best fantasy stories I have ever read.  7, 8 and 9 I freaking hate.  That is where I stopped.

I recently read the last two books in the series. I agree about the middle books getting tedious, but I like Sandersons pace and writing better than Jordans. I thought the final battle was going to happen in book 13. Nope. kept me going till the end though.

lol - same thing here... I'm waiting for the series to be done before my next pass.

Maybe others have better retention than I do.
