[ARCHIVED THREAD] - bass pro knife sharpening (Page 1 of 2)

| Do they do a good job? One of the delivery drivers who I always talk guns with was telling me he gets his knives sharpened there for free. |
| Gotta kill some time tomorrow while my dog's getting groomed, and there's a Bass Pro just up the street, so I figured I'd kill some time up there. Didn't know if it would be worth it to let them sharpen my knives for me. Of course, I can always take them to work with me tomorrow night and sharpen them. Good way to kill time since we aren't allowed to read at a fucking gas station. |

Just my take, I would never trust some minimum wage schmuck with my 7 dollar Mora, never mind my Randal less he take it to a grinder and kill the heat treat and/or take off half the blade. Umm, Randalls... Whatcha got? Jane I don't actually have it yet, I ordered a basic model 5 with a 5 in. O1 blade about a year ago, I'll tell you how I like it when it arrives in 2.5 to 3 years.

Their whole lineup, plus the premium for getting it that fast, could send a kid to college. TR85. |

I mean a bench grinder is cool for lawnmower blades so it must be great for my knives too!! |

No, see what you do is wait for your dad to go visit them, get treated like an asshole supposedly, and then give you his because he doesnt like them anymore. |

I was there with the Babe a few months ago looking at their skimpy collection and talking to the "knife guy". He mentioned a free sharpening. My babe was for it.
Now,my EDC isn't super expensive, just a little Spyderco Endura. She kept going on and on about "It's free! Do it!" I told her, right there,in front of the dude,"There's no way in hell I'm gonna let this guy touch my blade, much less sharpen it." Like a good girl she STFU. |

I've yet to meet a real deal knifemaker that didn't have the same social skills as a hungry wolverine. Emerson is an asshole. Strider? Also an asshole. The list goes on. Seems to be a trait of the breed. Good steel is good steel, though. TR85. |

They do a better job than I can do with just a stone. That's because I'm not very good with a stone. When it comes to a $30 pocket knife, I'm OK with letting the guy behind the counter run it through the machine. Maybe I'll rethink that one day when I decide to become a blade snob. Until then, a sharp knife from Bass Pro is better than a dull one from my stone.

| Buy a spyderco sharpmaker or kmw system with diamond stones and learn to use it if you want a sharp knife without learning freehand. However, freehand is great to know for touchup work. Both the benchmades I'm wearing 154cm minigriptillian and the s30v doug Ritter minigrip are sharp enough to make hair pop an I used a kme with dia sharp stones. |

A few months back I posted a question about knife sharpening. I've never been good at it and had several decent knives that needed to be sharpened. Several replies mentioned the Spyderco sharpmaker so I decided to give it a shot. It kicks ass. Just followed the instructions on the little DvD it comes with and in about 5 minutes I had my knife sharp enough to shave the hair on my arm with. |

I can't sharpen a knife for shit, I take mine to Smoky Mountain Knifeworks.........they can also, usually, have orders from Randall's within a couple weeks. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Dealers place non-specific batch orders years in advance. A month or so before the delivery date they'll specify exactly what model and configuration they want. At least, that's the story I got at the Blade Show a few years ago. Jane |

Follow up with a strop and green polishing compound for a razor edge. |

A bowhunting buddy of mine works the archery department at the local BPS and he sharpens my knives for me on said grinder. He does an amazing job and puts a razor edge on my skinning and EDC knives. I say go for it. If its not a low speed wheel in a water bath he's more than likely slowly killing the heat treat on your knives. The best way I've found to put a killer edge on a knife in short order without fucking it up is by using two buffing wheels loaded with fine and ultra fine grits. You cant put a fresh edge on but in about a minute you can get hair popping sharp. |

A piece of heavy harness leather bonded to a scrap block of wood. I use clear RTV as an adhesive. For chisels, I use a piece of granite tile as a platen and wet or dry paper as the abrasive. I use a piece of polished steel tubing laying next to the tile as a tool rest and judge the angle with a little wood gage I made by setting the gage next to the tool and putting an eyeball on it to get close enough. A gunmaker from New Hampshire taught me how to use the platen - long before the glass plate setup sold by Rockler, Woodcraft, and so on. The strops are pretty much obvious. Strops for gouges can be made up by attaching the leather to the edge of a piece of scrap, then carving a v shape on the edge, or bending the leather into a circular form. I haven't made strops from carved soft wood blocks, but I have used one and they work, too. A well tooled box probably needs both. |

If you have a cheap knife you don't care about, sure go ahead and let them have at it. Otherwise, pick up a couple of quality stones an do it yourself. You'll be amazed how quickly you can put a nice edge on your knife in 15 min. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Learn to sharpen, or find someone who can (hint: real sharpening NEVER involves a grinder or belt sander). TR85. I thought that was how professional knife makers sharpen their stuff? Belt sanders and other such aggressive tools are used by some knife makers to shape/reshape blades or define angles, actual sharpening is a different process, and involves stones and strops. If you're using a belt sander on a blade, it needs to be because you're fixing a broken tip, removing deep nicks or defining the angles/grinds on a well worn blade. If your first step in making a blade sharp is always going to a belt sander, it's because you don't know how to use stones. TR85. |
