So I am on call for jury duty next week (and the wife the week after that).  Timing for this couldn't have been much worse; I have a nasty project and an interesting training session at work and we are going to be out of town next weekend and the one after (we had planned on leaving Friday morning for both).

Now, ordinarily I'd love to do jury duty, at least the first time (I haven't done it before).  But I'm considering doing something like saying I believe in jury nullification (which I do) to get out of it.  Does that make me a bad person?  What say you, hivemind?

As long as you are honest, there is no problem. It's a civic duty but we as a society don't want to over burden potential jurors. Tell the judge its not a good time and the reason why.

You may be able to ask the judge to delay your participation due to an important work project.

As for actually sitting on a jury - it is an education all right, but maybe not the curriculum that you're expecting.

My wife was able to get a delay when she got called up.  Her duty period was the week before the AP exam, and she really couldn't afford to not be there to help her students review for it.  Filled out the form and they sent her back a new summons for during the summer.

I might be in the minority, but I find honesty is always the best policy.

Don't compromise your integrity.

I always offer up that I lived next to a cop growing up who ended up being Captain of the force. I remember stripe by stripe, thought that was really cool. Then I go a bit farther and offer that cops put their lives on the line every day and that their word is gold.

Never been selected, mostly true.

See, and I just show up wearing a jacket and a tie.  Never been selected.

The prosecution just takes one look at me and says, "Get that white boy out of here." although they pronounce it, "Please thank and excuse."

Don't wait until you are in the jury box to bring it up about your work or other schedule conflicts, communicate it with the jury office asap. They are a lot more likely to reschedule your service for you than the judge excusing you during selection at which point your only hope is either party's counsel not wanting you because you may be disgruntled about jury service messing up your schedule.
