I have an idea in mind to try to make a long range line of sight tv remote control.  My idea is to buy a IR Laser diode and simply remove the IR led out of the controller and replace it with the Laser Diode.

My Question is, will this work?

Just how big is your living room that you need an extra long range remote?

If it's the same wavelength and operating voltage, I would assume so.

Why not go RF?

How would you know precisely where you were pointing it to hit the IR receiver on the TV?

The tv would shut off.

The primary reasoning for the idea is the Kid in me wants to be able to shut off random people's tv's from a long distance away.  A laser is the only way that I know how to do this.

Also, just because it's a laser, that doesn't make the light output as a small dot.  I can focus it to any size that I want.

My dual DVR uses a RF remote to talk to the DVR box on the other side of the house for the 2nd signal.

I must say it sucks ass, you have to hold the remote a certain way for it to work and my house is only 1500 sq/ft. Pain in the ass.

Same as my inlaws.

It is pretty annoying.

It might be a poor installation. I've seen some doozies that caused all sorts of reception problems (and signal probs, too! One installer patched the antenna into the signal coax with a splitter to gain better antenna signal, which worked, but wrecked the tv signal).
