Ok so the judge has a bad rep for some reason.  I can see the shorter bbl versions laughable but I carry this on my tractor when I am mowing the my field just for snakes and varmits.  It fills the niche of not having to pack a large shotgun or rifle with me.  So does the judge have a place in your opinions as a practical firearm?  I works very well for me and when I take it to the range everyone wants to shoot it.  What say ye'

For snakes on the river is a good thing too

The primary issue is people wanting to use it for SD after being told to load it with birdshot!

Thats what I view the Judge as.  A snake and other varmint gun (at least with .410).  .45LC would be effective for self defense, but there are more comfortable platforms to use it in.

I think the hate for the Judge comes from marketing of Making watermelons 'asplode and equating that to doing it to someones head or torso.

I'm no Judge fan, but it looks to be a good snake gun. And .45LC is nothing sneeze at either for SD. Just don't get the two roles mixed up!

good snake gun, bad sd gun.  Even with .45 LC, the design neuters the 45.lc and leaves much to be disired.  It would be fine in a pinch, but its too big to carry, for the same size there are much better options.  But, for a do it all in a compact package gun, it good.

I do hate how everyone thinks its soooo sweet thogh.  My friend has one and acts like its the best thing since sliced bread.

Prop it up on a fence post or the fender of the tractor and go for it.

For unexpected critters it's an OK gun. You're good to go.

Oh no mixup here I was just trying to get an idea on why people seem to put the judge down and after reading the responses I can understand

I know where you are coming from I can't tell you how many people I have heard talking about a friend of mine saying he has a pistol that shoots shotgun shells and 45 lc they put alot of hype to it I always reply with thats cool and let it be.  they are amazed at its ability to blow up a soda can at 5 yrds.

That's it's niche.  I'm sure it's excellent for snakes, moles, and maybe gophers.

I don't know. People are too judgmental. I wouldn't judge you for it.

CCI sells shot shells for .45 ACP, .44 Special/Mag, .38 Special/.357 Mag.  And they work well.

Why buy a one-trick pony?  Just buy the ammo.

The biggest downfall of that gun is the fact that it's an answer to a question that no one asked.

At least, that's my take on it.

its marketed as being able to do something it can not...
that imo is enough to condemn it

Should have been called the "Critter Gitter".  Daisy already had that name for a CO2 shot pistol though.

I've always thought The Judge was a perfect gun for rats, snakes, and close-up squirrel/bird work.

I also want to take one to the trap range to see how I can do with it.

I agree, but if you do want a special purpose snake gun in a scabbard mounted to the tractor fender, there are cheaper ways to go.

It probably is a good snake/critter gun, but practice aiming to the side. Because the rifling is going to make it pattern like a doughnut, especially the longer that rifling gets and the safest place to be is right in the center.

Seriously, wtf? Flat disc projectiles? Are they supposed to go sideways?

Old_Painless has shown buckshot in this revolver flattens just like those discs.  By starting out flat, more energy can go to making velocity than deforming the round buckshot.

I'd have zero problem carrying it around the woods in Texas for cotton mouths and copper heads. Never as a weapon against humans though.
