So I have a hat that I wear pretty much any time I'm gonna be outside...and I tend to seat in it ALOT.  I like the hat and it's holding up well...it just smells.

So how do you guys get the smell out of your hats?  I used to throw it in the dishwasher...but we took our dishwasher out.  There has to be some super secret anti hat smell stuff that I'm overlooking.

Thanks

If it's a canvas ball cap, I just throw it in the washing machine by itself.

dip it in diesel...  Works for me.

I was told at work that the dishwasher is better on hats than washing machine. It wont tear it up.

I'm not really a hat guy, but my Dad is.He wears his in the shower, washes it with shampoo, rinses it out and hangs it up. Seems to work for him.

ETA: This is a boonie type hat he wears all the time, might not be a good idea for other types I dont know.

washing machine on the gentle cycle, then air dry overnight.

you'll be right as rain.

I just get a big bowl and put it in the sink and wash it by hand alternating warm soapy water and cool rinse water repeat 4x times or until the rinse is fairly clean...then let air dry.

Ive done that because every hat I put through a wash machine somehow just doesnt fit or feel right afterwards.

Washing machine, and dry on one of those plastic frames.

Dishwasher, top rack.

Throw hat IN plastic frame and then place in dishwasher.    Problem solved.
I think wally world sells the plastic frames.    You will have to crunch the bill
back into the proper curve although when wash/dry is complete.

Will gasoline work...it's all I have right now.  And is it gonna be an issue to light a cigarette?

This seems to be the most popular answer...night give it a go.

Place an order at Larue tactical, receive new free hat, toss out the old one. Repeat as necessary.

Any exposed metal? If not, get it wet and microwave it for a minute or two. It'll kill the smelly bacteria. Works for kitchen sponges too.

Just wash it in the kitchen sink with laundry detergent or even dish soap then hang it up to air dry .
I do this all the time ,washes the color out a little on some hats but it will stop stinking.

I was actually going to post something asking this earlier.

I've gotten tired of throwing out my old stinky hats.

Spray down with Simple Green and put in the dishwasher.

Use a washer. Soak with some white vinegar in the water before washing. In wash cycle use a little TSP.

Worked on my nasty coveralls.

I've worn the same ballcap 25% of the time for three years straight without washing it. The oil, dirt, and stink add character.

When my hats get soiled & stinky I fill a bucket with some really hot water and some Woolite.  Then I dip the hat in the mixture and thoroughly soak them.  Some scrubbing with a stiff brush may be required if they are extra dirty.  Then I rinse them off really well with cold water and then put them out in the sun to dry.  This way the bills aren't ruined and they aren't shrunk down to the size of a walnut.  Usually cleans them up pretty good.

I went with the washing machine method...a little oxy-clean in the sweat band...let it set for about 15 minutes...delicate cycle...and I just couldn't help myself after it's bath it got nuked in the microwave for about 30 seconds.

Shes hanging outside to dry right now...

Will report on fit and form later.

This.  I use laundry detergent, hot water and a scrub brush.  Rinse well, soak in fresh rinse water for a few minutes, then let drip dry in the shape you want it.

Just drop it on the ground and piss all over it.  Make sure you saturate the area where the bill meets the cap.  Let it air dry, this should neutralize the sweat smell.
4/25/2011 2:47:51 PM EDT
[#43]
Let it soak in some hot soapy water for a while, rinse it off in the shower until the water running off it goes clear.  Then hang it up and let it air dry, spray with febreeze and wear it.  If it gets really nasty it's time to get a new one.  I've been wearing the same flex-fit hat for at least 2 years and washing it like this about once a month.  Sometimes more often in the summer when I sweat more, less often in the winter.

I took mine to the waterslide park and wore it all day last summer.  That seemed to do the trick.  For a while.
