I set up a media server in my living room.  I have all of our other computers networked to it.  The "server" has an HDMI out so I can use my bigscreen as a monitor for browsing, watching videos, etc.  Problem is, the only way I can figure out how to browse with it is to use my smartphone as a mouse (software called gmote for android).  It's cool, but a PITA.  I don't really want to go out and buy a wireless keyboard and mouse.  What I'd like to do is be able to "remote control" it using one of my laptops.  I can remote desktop in, but that just brings the desktop to my laptop.  I want to be able to control it "live" for lack of a better term.  Whatever actions I do on my laptop should show up on the bigscreen, running through the server.

How can I accomplish this?

What? Just remote into the machine, and do what you need to do.  It will be on the laptop's screen (at reduced size), and on the TV's screen.

Look into VNC if your definition of "remote in" and the rest of the industry's differ for some reason.

When I remote in, the server's screen goes blank and my laptop pops up with what the servers monitor used to show.  Perhaps I have a setting wrong?

Oh, that's odd.  It must be some setting in the remote desktop software.  Worst case, you can use a different remote desktop server application.

RealVNC makes a nice program, but it costs money nowadays.

What version of Windows are you using, btw?

Laptop is Windows 7, server is XP.  I'm just using the remote application that comes with windows.

Your problem is that you are using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) You want to use a VNC application instead. You need to setup a VNC server on your media server then use an VNC viewer to control it. I have a similar setup only a whole lot more complicated and use Ultra VNC to do exactly what you are describing.

Yup!  That fixed it.  Composing this reply on my laptop, but actually posting from my server and looking at the big screen.  Thanks for the tip on UltraVNC.

Just curious:  You're basically sitting on your couch in front of your big screen which has the server connected to it and using the laptop's keyboard and mouse and the big screen as the monitor?

Exactly.  I could do it from anywhere in the house (or even not at the house if I configured it that way).
