Various twitter accounts are reporting that The Smithsonian is getting Discovery, the Enterprise is going to New York, Atlantis is going to Florida, and Endeavour is going to California. I hope they're wrong. My fingers are crossed that Houston, Alabama and Ohio end up with Atlantis, Endeavour and Enterprise. I guess we'll find out in 30 minutes or so. |
|
Quoted: There is no way HSV is getting a shuttle. Not enough $$$$ to grease the political wheels. If not the biggest rocket park in the US, I guess I would want Florida to get it. Either way, I'll be pissed if Houston doesn't get a shuttle, even if it's the Enterprise or the Pathfinder from AL. |
|
Kansas Cosmosphere looked into getting either Atlantis or Endeavor, but the fee was just way too high. Enterprise is part of the Smithsonian collection, and is on display right now at Udvar-Hazy. It may be loaned out to the Intrepid museum, but it belongs to the Smithsonian. |
|
I just hope they all go to organizations that can preserve them, and not some yahoos who are going to park them outside, on or near a carrier deck, in the shittiest weather south of Alaska...
I don't like New York, can you tell? IMO: Smithsonian should get first pick, then Houston, then Cape Kennedy, leaving one up for grabs. |
|
I want to see the Seattle Museum of Flight get one. They would fly it in on the back of one of our 747's and park it right across the street from Boeing Field. I will be there with my DSLR when it comes in.

Great no space program to speak of. It will be be just wonderful to see our shuttles in a museum instead of where they should be.......flying. Never thought I would see this in my life time. Thank the kenyan. He would rather pay welfare than have a space program. |

Why the fuck should New York get anything space-related? the apollo lunar landers were designed and built on Long Island, NY. back when the USA had an industrial base and was not debtor shithole with a communist president, there was stuff being made all over the country my dad worked in a steel mill in trenton, NJ. Can you imagine that? |

Never thought I would see this in my life time. good riddance the space shuttle sucks shit from a dead donkey's asshole they replaced cheap, excellent, robust apollo hardware with that flying turd, the damn thing basically ruined the US space program one launch of the shuttle cost more than the entire voyager program aside from that, it's awesome. you guys realize that they could have kept astronauts on the moon for a month? now that they're planning on going back to the moon, the NASA guys are taking apollo shit apart at museums, trying to figure out how it worked. way to go NASA, have 300,000 guys work for ten years on the hardware, then shut program down and throw the records into a landfill |

If we still had at least the S-1C first stage in the form of a flyback booster, then we could easily build a new moonshot program on a super mature platform that powered the first moon flights. I hate to say it but I think the Russians had the right idea with the buran energia system. Their giant ass rocket was independent of the shuttle and could launch other things like a orbital battle station. |

The Enterprise Prototype is going to New York. Smithsonian still has the real Enterprise. All the sites were chosen for coastal locations that "would attract international tourism."
ETA: I was hoping WPAFB National Air and Space Museum would have gotten one. We have a kick ass restoration area and they've already talked about adding another hangar past the missile tower. |

Enterprise is already at the Air and Space museum. Why the hell would it be moved? Because they're getting the Discovery, IMO the most important shuttle of the fleet. Yep, I think just about everyone expected the Discovery to go to the Smithsonian. I believe a big part of this is the actual display plans that each museum has, I thought Kennedy Space Center's looked pretty good, I'm sure they'll get one. |

Quoted: Quoted: This would be sad news for the Museum of Flight in Seattle. They have already been prepping the sight for one. They are getting the Explorer, the full scale replica that is at Kennedy. Seattle is getting the Full Fuselage Trainer http://dx14.jsc.nasa.gov/htmls/fft.htm |

Then again, our gov't isn't one to go, okay, I blew a ton of money, it didn't work out so yeah we're going back to the old shit. No, our gov't would rather keep spending money on it to make it look like it's not a piece of shit. (We've done this more than once) |
| Man I'm disappointed for the National Air Force Museum at WPAFB. Maybe we could work a trade? Ok we will give you the XB-70 and the Memphis Belle when she is done in return for a shuttle. Just kidding! I really hope that NY has a facility worthy of one and it doesn't sit outside!!!! |

Quoted:
There is no way the Obama Administration is going to let Texas have a space shuttle. As far as they are concerned we did not vote for the "One" and we will not be rewarded with one. The only space shuttle we will ever be able to lay claim to is Columbia. Sadly, thats how it's going to work. |

It was used for 747 interface, and initial glide and approach testing. |
|
Quoted: Rumor is, these were not given away. I also heard they were to be sealed up, only to be viewed from the exterior. That would make it not so desirable for many museums. Why sealed? OPSEC? Bubba? Im thinking some close-hold info maybe? Haven't we already has a few other nations astronauts on our shuttles? Genuinely curious.
|
|
My cousin was director of displays at Wright-Patt until he retired several years ago. They were supposed to get one after the program ended. During W's administration. Look how that worked out. Why in the hell does New York need one to park on a WW2 carrier for? The weather alone will kill it in no time. Payoff to Hillary maybe? Wright-Patt has a better collection than anything outside of DC.

|
Quoted: Sealed, because the inside of space vehicles is not built for fat-fuck tourist foot traffic. Everything in there is built of unobtanium. Furthermore, there really isn't that much room inside one. Quoted: Rumor is, these were not given away. I also heard they were to be sealed up, only to be viewed from the exterior. It was used for 747 interface, and initial glide and approach testing. After they lost the Challenger, NASA did consider making the Enterprise space-worthy, but it was already in the Smithsonian's collection. Besides the work needed to upgrade it, there was the issue of reaching an agreement to get it back from the Smithsonian. |

I would expect Kennedy to get Atlantis and Explorer would get moved elsewhere. |

Indoor climate-controlled storage was a requirement for any prospective recipient museum. |

I would imagine a NY winter would be an even worse environment? The Air Force Museum at Wright Pat would preserve this National Treasure forever. Maybe this stupid decision can be reversed when an adult takes control of the country in Jan '13. |

Museum Recipients
Competing Displays Atlantis - Kennedy (bottom left) Discovery - Smithsonian (Top Left, currently Enterprise) Endeavor - California Science Center Enterprise - Intrepid (Top Right) ETA:
NASA has decided the final museum homes for its space shuttle fleet. Shuttle Discovery will go to the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, Chantilly, Va. (upper left); the shuttle test orbiter Enterprise will go to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, New York City (illustration at upper right); shuttle Atlantis will go to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Florida (bottom left). The test orbiter Enterprise is shown at bottom right. CREDIT: collectSPACE.com/Robert Pearlman I think the Kennedy and Intrepid displays look good, but I don't know why california got one, I thought the published museum displays were the finalists and the California science center wasn't shown? |
