Fluid and Filter vs Fluid Exchange. I've always done the fluid drain and filter swap. Is there any reason I should consider the fluid exchange?

use the fluid exchange if you want a new transmission.

I have done the BG Flush deal before, and will be doing it again for a truck I recently bought.  My business partner just had his done.

The BG flush as you said does not replace your filter, but it does backflush it supposedly.  Since you do not drop the pan, you will not worry about leaks around it.  The system also flushes the torque converter, and they run the fluid through the tranny until the fluid runs clean, then they top it off with a conditioner.  I think that running the fluid through it instead of just draining, is more likely to get out stuff you don't want in there.  Thats just my opinion anyway.

I had it done to my Dodge Ram at 72k miles.  Prior to that I had never touched the tranny.  It immediately shifted smoother.  I have 110k on it now with no problems, and I would do it again, and probably will soon.

1.  contact the manufacturer and learn:
    a. when to change transmission fluid; and,
    b.  whether there is a proprietary fluid specifically designed for the car.

Before going on to 2., I heartily acknowledge that some cars need a change before 100,000 miles; and that some purportedly proprietary fluids aren't.  Conversely, if you do your research like on a Toyota, you do learn that it is 100,000 miles and it is proprietary.

2.  do not flush until you have talked to a genuine transmission expert about your specific vehicle.  Flushing moves the particles.  Draining takes out most of the stuff.

Draining just the fluid in the sump pan still leaves several gallons of old fluid in the torque converter, valve body, etc. - which makes just about as much sense as changing only one quart of motor oil every 3-5K.

This!

Drop the pan and clean it out, most flushes just stir those chips back up into the oil and does nothing for the filter.

I just change the fluid and filter and run some Lucas transmission additive to replace the fluid additives that the fluid loses over time.
