It has been my observation that American legislators at all levels of government (Federal, State and Local) have three very bad professional habits:

1. They stick their noses into things that they should be leaving alone.

2. They keep their noses out of things that they should be intervening in.

3. They spend other people's money like there's no tomorrow.

Before I moved to Texas, I was completely unfamiliar with the concept of a part time legislature. Since moving to Texas I have observed that while part time legislatures are not perfect, they are far less apt to try and fix shit that ain't broke than full time legislatures. For those of you unfamiliar with Texas' state government, our legislature meets for 140 days every other year, unless the Governor calls an emergency session to deal with a crisis. They pack a lot of shit into those 140 days, but they don't do anywhere near as much damage as a full time legislature.

I think we should amend the US Constitution to set up a similar system for our Federal Congress. Let them meet for 180 days every other year, unless the President calls an emergency session for the purpose of dealing with a disaster or declaring war. I think we should pay them the same rate that people get paid for serving on a Federal Jury. $50/day or whatever. Make the fuckers get real jobs when they're not in session.

One last thing, I say fuck this budget extension bullshit. Let the Federal Government shut down. Fund the Military, prisons and the FBI, but send the rest of those assholes home for a few weeks.
