i'll be in chicago for some business training april 26 through may 6. i am dreading every minute of it. don't have a choice. will be in the itasca area. anything worth risking my life to see or do? |
|
Don't forget that there are some other museums and such right there as well. Shed Aquarium is pretty sweet as well. I could spend 3 days in those alone.
|
|
U505 german submarine is a must see. about a hour drive from where you will be but worth it! the museum of science and industry easily takes a whole day to see.
1ST DIVISION museum at cantigny is not far from itasca. the museum is awesome! PORTILLOS is the place for hotdogs. why only get a hotdog? order a COMBO sammich lightly dipped with hot peppers and a tamale! PEAQUODS is the place for pizza. its down town so plan accordingly. WHITE SOX baseball... accept no imitations. i suggest taking public transportation. WILLIS TOWER on a clear day is also pretty cool . hopefully its a windy day so there will be tsunamis in the toilets! CARMICHAELS STEAKHOUSE is the place for red meat! forget mortons and the chains. be ready to drop a pretty penny at carmichaels but its a meal you won't soon forget! THE EVIL OLIVE on mondays for the porn and chicken parties is a great place to people watch. THE BATON CLUB is a tradition for southerners coming to chicago for nightlife! what other things would you be interested in? chicago is a great place to visit! FOOD FOOD FOOD |

THAT. Chicago is not too bad... at least it wasn't when I was up there in '98. Three weeks worth of training at the (company I worked for) facility in one of the villages outside of Chicago. On the weekends, several other people visiting would ride the train into the downtown area. I didn't feel unsafe at all. You can check out the Navy Pier, go up in the Sears tower, and definitely check out the museums. When I was there, the line for the U-505 was well over an hour wait, so I skipped it. |

I'd add Fleming's to the steak list. Spectacular. Portillo's is amazing. Pizza, you're high. You want Chicago pizza get some Pizzaria Uno or Due, Gino's East, Connie's, I've never even heard of Peaquouds and I've lived in the southern burbs my whole life. |

Museum of science and industry and field museum were really good to visit. I was there last fall. I did not like the train at all for getting around, disgusting and way too many people, but it was cheap. I also did not like getting off the train on garfield Ave (I think this was it) and walking for an hour or so to get to the museum. kinda a shitty neighborhood, at least it sure looked worse than the others. maybe some of the illinois members that live in shitcago |
|
If you don't like waiting around in lines, try going up to the top of the John Hancock Tower instead of the Sears Tower. The latter is technically taller, but the lines at the former are much shorter and the views are similar. You may also remember the Hancock Tower from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".
You can also walk from the Hancock building to see the Water building (on Michigan) and then to the Weber Grille restaurant (off Ohio?). Edit to add my usual dining recommendations: Hugo's Frog Bar (sister restaurant to Gibson's so you get basically the same steak), AVEC and Sepia. Also, make sure to try a fried Twinkie (Chicago is the home of the Twinkie). |

When my wife and I go, we stay at the Renaissance, down by the canal. We love walking around there, over to Michigan Ave, along the canal.
Navy Pier is cool too...in the Fall not much is going on. I would guess as this time of year, it might be different. Don't forget the Billy Goat Tavern. |

It's Chicago, not Mogadishu. You'll be just fine. I think you'll enjoy the Navy Pier and I also recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. Also eat as much as possible, almost all of the food is better than the restaurants back home. |
| All of the above plus kuma's for a burger and hot doug's for a hot dog. Pequods is the best pizza in the city right now. Try and catch a game at Wrigley. Sit in the bleachers. I also love the art institute. Even if you are not into art I would highly recommend it. |
| I live in Chicago and I am a LEO. I agree with the mentioned places to visit. I just want to warn you that we are currently having problems in the downtown are with "wildings". There are groups of teens praying on the unsuspecting and robbing them. They will walk up to you and grab your cell phone out of your hand and beat the hell out of you. Just be aware of your surroundings and enjoy. |

It's Chicago, not Mogadishu. You'll be just fine. But, if you ARE interested in Mogadishu feel free to breeze on through the south and west side of the city. You'll love it. It's hard to find good Quat, though. |
|
If you're headed downtown, the Art Institute is world class.
With no traffic, downtown is maybe 25 minutes from Itasca. But there will be traffic, and lot's of it. You're just south and east of Schaumburg, and if you can't find a decent restaurant there you're not looking (Shaws, Mortons among them). |

Yes we all know about the politics but the city and what it has to offer in terms of eating/seeing/etc is very nice. Don't go south of I-55 and you'll be fine. If you start getting into streets where they are numbers instead of names... you are better off wearing body armor. |

Pequods is somewhat different in the deep dish world, the crust is what? - slightly harder and burnt - but in a good way. As a past regular customer of their Clybourn Av location, they closed for a month to remodel mid 2000's and when they reopened, their Pizza were lousy so I gave up on them. I moved from Chicago in 2008 so I guess they are doing well like they used to. OP, here are two gems. Go to Fontano's Subs and get the biggest "Blockbuster" sub you can eat. That is what it is called, The Blockbuster. When they were at their original Loop location just west of the BOT, if you didn't get there before 11am forget it, the traders were lined up for miles. Go to Pompeii Bakery and get a Poorboy(s). It is an Italian turnover. Bad for your arteries but worth it. |

Went there every chance I could while going to school at UIC. Awesome meatball sandwich too. |

Yet their bread, meat and cheese just seems to be heads above anyone, anywhere. |
