Well, if it is a herniated disc or severely bulging disc it can cause your legs to give out, more severe pain, and incontinence of the bladder and/or bowels.  If it is severe, you probably want to get it checked soon.

I have severe back problems and have had my spine fused to fix the issues.  I had a good 5 years and now when I'm walking my whole leg from hip to foot goes numb in the middle of walking.  My pain is excruciating.

I'm a fat guy who started doing deadlifts fifteen years ago after my first back spasm.

No more back problems.

I injured my back OTJ a few years ago (ruptured disc) and I had Spinal decompression initiated within 3 days.  While sometimes it still hurts like hell, it has never gotten as bad as it was.  I would recommend that kind of therapy.  Basically they stretch you on a rack, but its real slow and computer controlled.  If you don't do anything then you could damage the nerves, you might have some kind of neuropathy and loose some use of extremities, extreme pain from sciatica (i've seen grown men cry from bad cases of this)....

Backs are funny things, it could be something small that will go away on it's own or something not so small.

Not being in good shape is bad for your back but usually you can't tell that until you are old. I had a back issue that would crop up every now and then, I went to the doc once about it and they said nothing was wrong.

It stopped going away last year and I had an mri which showed stuff wrong with my back. An xray will only pic up bone issues, mri's will show injury to soft tissue. I'm going to physical therapy right now but it's not helping, I actually think there have been some changes that are not reflected in the old mri.

I know, I'm not much help. There was a thread here recently and apparently certain issues can become untreatable if left untreated. I'm refering to the thread on lamenectmies. I'll try to find the link.

I think you should go and listen to the doc. The best time to nip something in the bud is when you are young enough to heal. The older you get the more this shit sucks and the harder it is to treat it seems.

eta: here is the link to the back thread.

Go to a spine doctor (NOT a chiropractor). Have them take some x-rays and maybe an MRI.

Back problems are degenerative, especially disc damage. If caught and treated early then they can be rectified with maybe injections or minor, minimally invasive orthoscopic surgery or managed with pain meds and an exercise program.

If you let them go, of fall for a line of BS from some chiropractor then you wind up having to have lumbar fusion surgery and a fair amount of metal hardware attached to your backbone.
4/2/2011 1:25:10 PM EDT
[#8]
You're a big guy and it may not help your situation, but the sooner you get it checked out and have an MRI, you'll know for sure what the problem is and can treat it accordingly.  You can do some various stretching to try and help, but doing the wrong things could make it worse too.  Skip the chiropractor and go to the real DR. I've got 2 herniated disks in my lower back right now and my dad is going in for an operation 3 more herniated thoracic disks next month.  He's having some of the physical issues mentioned above, specifically bladder control and legs.

I have that same problem every now and then, usually when I life something wrong.  Try putting some heat on it, as it could be a pulled muscle or something similar.
Try some heat for a couple of days, if it does not get better...see the doc.  Either way I hope you get better.

What I do when my lower two bulged disks give me problems:

Do back exercises.  It helps a lot.  Let me know and I can scan and email a page I got from a back health doc at my doctors office.
Get out and walk.  It will help a ton an I should do this more.  I sued to walk 2 to 4 miles a day, 7 days a week and it really helped.  Now I need to start again.
Ice packs.  Lay down with one on  your back.
2 Ibuprofen and two extra strength tylenol.  It helps a lot.

I also have a script for flexiral (sic) when it gets really bad.

See your doctor.

Edit:  Do not use heat unless directed by a physician.

Go see a good sports Dr.  I always thought they were a joke, till I effed up my shoulder.  When I drove to see him I had to grab the bottom of the steering wheel cause I could not lift my arm up.  Left his office at 100% pain free and full range of motion.  Not that pricey, was like a C note.  Well worth it.  I still go from time to time for some tweaks.

You's be amazed as to how fragile the back can be.  Turn wrong and it could pull a muscle.  Hell, flipping over at night could have been the last straw on a bad disk you didn't even know you had.

Don't be stubborn about it.  What do you have to lose by going to the doctor, FAR less than walking around with something seriously wrong.  I suffer daily with constant pain, limitations, etc.  My spine feels like it is in a vice grip.  I cannot physically do many things I'd love to be able to do.  Things as simple as walking through the grocery store is very painful for me.  I can't play sports, and do fun things with my children.  I had my back surgery at 22 years old.  I will be 32 this year and feel like an old women.  I have seen old women get around better than me.  Now that my legs are going numb while I am walking I am worrying about paralysis one day and it scares me.  For you it could be a simple fix, but if you wait you will end up having to get major back surgery or even paralysis.

Because you are truly relaxed when sleeping, sometimes the way you sleep puts strain on the back.  Funny thing is you never know its happening.  I do it all the time with my neck.  I just wake up and can't turn my head to the side.

+1

Stay far away from the Chiropractor. Go see an Orthopedic Surgeon to get checked out. They have a shot like Cortisone, but lasts for several years. They stuck me right in the middle of my spine to get to the disc, but I haven't had much pain for several years. Little by little I'm noticing some pain in that area where the bad disc is, so I might be due for another shot. The doc told me he has one guy that comes in every five years or so for this. If you need surgery, the modern minimal evasive techniques are wonderful.

Damn!!!! One of the things I have is an "annular tear"!!!!!  I didn't think that's what is causing my discomfort. Nothing seems to help! Even the shot didn't help and I have never had a cortisone shot that didn't help. Also "facets disease" whatever that is. I have "cervical disk disease" too. Apparently they call injuries diseases these days.

I didn't think these was surgery for annular tears or the other stuff and was starting to feel hopeless. I still feel hopeless but I'm going to go back to my orthopedic doctor and maybe they can do another mri.
