When filling out the employment section, they require verification of unemployment. There are a three periods in the past ten years where I've taken time off to do school full time, and a period that I was laid off for about 4 months. I've never collected unemployment so there's no paper trail there, should I just put in a friend who would say I wasn't working during that time? Can it be the same person or should it be different each instance?
I've always been told putting mom on the form in any way is a huge mistake. |

Just put somebody that can verify your employement or unemployment if asked. This, and good luck. The SF 86 is a PITA. Yup. And save multiple copies of it in multiple places, so down the road when it is time to renew you don't have to try to recreate all that again. |

If the investigators have any questions, they'll come talk to you. And definitely keep a copy somewhere. Updating it will take hours or days if you don't have a previous copy. |

Yup. And the people you put down are just a starting point. It is the people who know you who they discover talking to other people who they really go ask- the ones you don't put down. |

You know, I thought this was the case too, but it doesn't seem to be. They hardly contacted any of my listed names and never asked for a secondary source from any of them. They came to my current work, my neighbors, and called (not visited) a few of my primary references. That's it. I passed. I was unimpressed. I thought there'd be a more rigorous process since the background check is where they can learn the most about you.

Thanks guys, it's been pretty easy so far. I wasn't really sure what to put for unemployment verifiers, whether a friend who could say "yeah, he took time off for school" or "he got laid off last summer" was sufficient, or I needed something more official. I know that they're really looking for signs that I've worked off the books somewhere.
The biggest problem I find is not being a very sentimental person. A lot of shit has seemed not worth remembering up until now. |

Isn't there a comments section for each area of the form? Just explain the gaps there.
Depending on the level of clearance and type of job (civilian employee, military, contractor) they may not even contact references. For example, the check required for a secret as a contractor normally does not include letters sent out to your references. |

| You can use the same friend for all of them and it won't be a problem. Pay attention to the fine print though. When it asks for people who know you well it states to use people who aren't listed elsewhere on the form. Depending on who is reviewing your form they might not care if you use a friend listed elsewhere on the form or they might have you redo it. |
