I wound up getting a deal on a Compaq iPAQ 3635, with a couple of accessories--including a Compact Flash Sleeve (I have a C-F 128Meg card coming in the next couple of days).

What to put in it?

I need one or two good games.

I could also use a decent drug reference guide--epocrates doesn't work for the pocket PCs yet, and the portable PDR won't let students download (only people with DEA #'s, Nurse Practitioners, and PA's).

Any other suggestions?

I hate to pay for software only to find out it wasn't worth the money, or to find out I could have gotten something identical as freeware.

Thanks for any ideas!!

Well, I've got a Palm IIIc, but the concept is somewhat similar. Here's what I've got:

1-2Convert, converts all sorts of units into others, like fps into fahrenheit and back into liquid ounces ;)

I deleted the built in calculator, and replaced it with one made by the same guy who wrote the conversion program (www.leloproductions.com)

Acrobat Reader for PalmOS (and a converter for it on the desktop PC), current file: "From a Buick 8", by Stephen King ... check Amazon for the publishing date...September 2002 :)

CityTime, a graphical world-time clock, displays the time in 100 places on a map (by default, you can add your own, and delete unwanted ones)

A Collins dictionary English-German/German-English

iSilo, html reader for PDAs (currently displaying a list of German WW2 manufacturer's codes and dates for gun shows)

JackFlash/JackSprat, allows you to access and alter the flash memory you're not supposed to alter or access (more memory for you)

Klondike, a solitaire game like the one in Windows

WordSmith, to create, read and edit RTF and DOC files, current file: "The Sum of all Fears", Tom Clancy

Besides those, I've left a few standard apps on it that came with PalmOS 4.1: Address Book, Clock. DateBook, Mail, Memo Pad, NotePad

Anyway, I bought my first Palmas ebook reader, but it sneaked it's way into everyday life. Hope that gives you some clues what to do with the Compaq ;)

Consider a GPS attachment.

Good personal time management software such as Franklin Covey's software
FOr designer's The iPAQ offers a variety of programs including InSite View for AutoCAD as well as similar programs for other CAD/CAM programs.

Transfer useful documents, references, etc. from your PC to your pocket PC for quick reference.  I always keep a book or two on my Palm for entertainment when I find myself unavoidably detained in traffic or waiting in a doctor's office or whatever.   Rarely a page-turner type book, but usually something I'm willing to wade through over an extended and interrupted period of time.  Books take up little space though.

I keep a ton of computer information on my Palm, all of it password protected.  I'm looking for an encryption product that is palm compatible for even better protection.

Another thing the iPAQ can do is serve as an MP3 music player.  Store a pile of your favorite music on it.

The iPAQ is easily the most powerful PDA on the market right now. And while it does not hold market dominance across the market, PALM devices hold the majority of licenses, but serve well only in the administrative low-end space, the iPAQ family holds market share in the high-end arena where PDA's are expected to actually do more than act as a pocket rolodex and daytimer.

Yup, and the HP Jornada is now being phased out, so is the HP enterprise storage product line, some of its intel based servers and workstations, PC's and notebook computers etc.

What's got a lot of people worried though is how successful theya re going to be at merging the two companies radically different management and operating styles.  HP is an awful lot like the old Digital, which is not necessarily a good thing.

Frankly I'm hoping that this, most controversial of mergers, won't sink both companies in the end.

AFARR, you should have bought a PALM.  Well at least for my sake, I own a lot of PALM shares and you would have helped me out.  [:)]  The pocket PC is a good OS, but it's not as user friendly as PALM's OS, IMO.  What helps sell the Ipaq line is the color screen which is nice, but all the others will follow.  BTW. guys if you are looking into investing some mad money into the markets look at PALM.  PALM, will be spinning off its software division into a new entity called Palm Source.  I think PALM is a ten bagger 2-3 years out!

Morgan,

Palm won't be around by then.  The OS might be, but they are so far behind the curve hardware wise, that unit will be dead (and so will your stock).

Dump your palm now and take the loss, and for gods sake don't even think about putting it into Handspring....

Well I can tell you this.  This merger is being handled in a far far better manner than the Compaq/Digital merger.  That deal destroyed Digital I'm sorry to say.  There was no real attempt at integrating the 2 companies.  Same goes with Tandem.  Fortunately for them Compaq pretty much left them alone.  This time around they are making a very real attempt at integrating the 2 companies.  There are gonna be some bumps for sure, (I work for Compa...I mean HP btw)  I've been working on the IT infrastructure integration.  It's pretty strange working with them.  They are very process oriented and  extremely decentralized, while we like to fly by the seat of our pants and are very centralized.  I'm beginning to really hate 10:00 PM meetings with those dudes from India.

Get a GPS co-pilot sleeve. Comes with car mount and software. check it out on mobileplanet.com.

I plan on getting an iPAQ (soon) just for this sleeve... but for everything I want, it will cost about $1800...

I have a Palm VII (not by choice), as a temporary solution until I get my iPAQ. (hey-- it was free! and its wireless) Anyway, its so easy to use, has no real file structure, has limited number of categories for each program, etc.-- it will not confuse (as easily) computer illiterate users, which is a major selling point. It is very basic and too easy to use. That is Palm's advantage over the iPAQ. It isn't going away anytime soon.
