My wife and I want to go to the outer banks of NC sometime in the fall and take our dog.. We want to rent a house neart eh beach...
I would like to find a beach/community that allows dogs to be off-leash part of the time (early morning or late afternoon) or anytime.. Any suggestions for beaches or areas? Any pet friendly homes to rent that you know of? thanks Brian |

That pretty much rules out anything below Nagshead as dogs have to be on a leash on pretty much the whole of Hatteras Island. Can't say about anything north of there. Here is a decent link.

| Northern beaches are great for Dogs. I have seen lot's of people in Kill Devil Hills area walking dogs in early morning with no leashes. I don't think it is a big issue unless the dog is causing problems. Generally the early moring bunch is mostly fisherman and dog walkers. |
| I have vacationed in the OBX for years. Never brought a dog, but there are lots of people who do. Have seen one Lab surfing with its owner! We use Stan White realty (http://www.outerbanksrentals.com/), just get a dogs allowed house, seems pretty common. OBX is very laid back, as long as your dog is reasonably well behaved it shouldn't be a problem. Awful Arthur's for clams/shrimp/beers in the afternoon! |

we've been going to Hatteras every May for several years, and have friends that live there year round. we don't take our dogs, but the froends have dogs. i know when walking the beach, if they take their dogs off lead, they keep an eye out for LE - i believe they said it's about a $100 fine if you're caught with a dog off lead.
i don't know about sound side - if you get a house on the sound it's not patrolled like the beach areas. you could probably take your dogs in the water there easier, and the water is much warmer in the off season (late spring and early fall) since it's shallow. i'll second the laid back atmosphere - most relaxing vacation spot we've found. if you want night life and to be entertained it's not your place. if you like walks on deserted beaches and can make your own entertainment it's fantastic. we've used Hatteras Realty and Midgett Realty - Google them, and you can search by area, soundside vs ocenfront, etc, with descriptions telling you if pets are OK. we've decided we like soundside better (wading, kayaking) - been staying in the Frisco area south of the lighthouse or north end of Hatteras Village so the ocean is just across the road from soundside and you can walk across in a couple minutes. |

I went last fall...first time in over 10 years (used to live in Richmond and went occasionally, but had to move for school/work). Had a blast. Stayed in a 3 Br Timeshare in Duck..each of the kids had their own room (and TV)...amazing how little fighting there was..
Weather was bad that week (last week in Sept. going into Oct), but still had fun. That's usually a great time to go, but just had some bad weather luck. Going back again this year around the same time.. I seem to recall that there are a few places that said Pets OK when we were looking for places...and there's a kennel on the OBX that I recall driving by (probably pricey, but it might be cheaper than a pet deposit for a rental). Someone sent me this on another board
OBX Beach Rules Duck and Kitty Hawk are the only beaches that allow off leash dogs - as long as they are well behaved and the owner is close by thanks everyone Brian |
