Is it good/bad/required for the person interviewing to ask the company/department when they will be choosing the person for the job at the end of an interview.

I have been asked that question a lot.... In making my choices it has no real bearing on the outcome.

By the time you get to that point you have made your impression and that question is not going to sway the decision.

I think it is proper etiquette for the potential employer to inform the candidate when they intend on contacting said individuals. If they fail to do so I see nothing wrong with enquiring on when I may potentially be notified yes or no.

Lots of things can happen.  They may make offers and negotiate and get shut down.  The other may find a job elsewhere.  They may change up the position or job requirements.

Take the question and answer with a grain of salt.

I've never heard anyone having a bad impression after being asked that question, and it doesn't irritate me when I'm asked either.

If I'm interviewing and they don't tell me during the interview when they're planning to decide, of course I ask.

Once I had a company say they wanted me but it was taking them a while to get the paperwork etc. done because everyone was overworked / underwater.  I let them slide for a week or so, but another company wanted me too and was begging for an answer.  I told the first company this outright and said they had until the end of the week (two more days) to make up their mind.  They brought me in that friday to get the paperwork done, and I started Monday.
