What can I be ticketed for in a parking lot?
Handicapped spots and parking in front of the fire lane I get, but can I be ticketed for stop signs or other traffic signs that are posted in parking lots? |

In most jurisdictions, being a nervous nellie is a "beat and release" offense even on private property, but in the officer's discretion a ticket may be issued instead. Be careful. But try not to look like you're worried. |
| In some states, private owners of road or parking areas can contract with the police for enforcement of traffic in their lots. In other words, sometimes stop sign ,speeding and other violations CAN be ticketed. We have a trailer court in our jurisdiction that did/does have this contract. |

Depends on the parking lot.
Generally, the V & T Law doesn't apply to private property. The handicap tickets you mentioned are one exception, along with DWI. In my state if the town board passes a local law to cover the lot under VTL at the property owners request, then any section of the VTL can be written there. Several of our local malls have taken this step because of problems they've had with drivers. |
