Even the Wash Post admits that there is a large gap in the unemployment numbers made up of "discouraged" workers who have left the labor force and are no longer counted in the U3 or U6 number.

“Overshadowing the nation’s economic recovery is not only the number of Americans who have lost their jobs, but also those who have stopped looking for new ones.  These workers are not counted in the Labor Department’s monthly unemployment rate, yet they say they are willing to work. Since the recession began, their numbers have grown by 30 percent, to more than 6.4 million, amounting to a hidden labor force that could stymie the turnaround. Adding these workers to February’s jobless rate pushes it up to 10.5 percent, well above the more commonly cited 8.9 percent rate.”

Its kinda of hard to say it does not exist when there are so many people who are collecting food stamps and welfare.

Especially when there are a bunch of folks just hanging out.

I see a good deal of older back to college students. I am sure it is like this on every campus. Colleges career centers are not well versed in "too much experience" so go get help with a professional resume writer. That is what I was told last week. Professors don't like the hard questions or real life scenario questions either in the business classes. I have noticed two out of five professors I have had do not have any business experience and no stories to tell at all.

I remember mentioning this in another thread.  Dave_A told me I was wrong.  I wish he were right and I was wrong.

That also doesn't count people like me, whose 40hr full time jobs have pared them back to 32, then 28, and now 24hrs a week. Oh ya, and they now prorate my vacation and holiday pay based on hours worked, so I get screwed twice.

I'm glad Obama brought us hope and change. I don't know how we got along without him.

Count my wife in that group.

My mom would still be working too if her job hadn't gotten shipped to Mexico.    Instead, she decided to go ahead and retire early.

You are actually counted in the U6 number but nobody looks at the U6 number.  U6 is supposed to count the unemployment and underemployment percentage of the entire labor force.  I guess that number was too scarry so they just started taking people out of the "labor force" number altogether so they could fudge U3 and U6 at the same time.  There are a lot of other stats they they haven't managed to cover up that reveal this like the labor force number, decline .gov revenues, etc...

If the labor force were the same size now as it was in 2007, the U3 number would likely be around 12.5%.  Ask yourself, has there been a mass die-off of working age people since 2007?  Where did all of those workers go?  Answer: .gov just stopped counting them.

Exactly right! Homerun Mon Frere!

The problem is that the government etc uses the U3 to count unemployment, and the U3 is based on how many people are receiving Government Unemployment benefits. Even if, next month, not a single job opened nor closed, and everything stayed exactly the same, the U3 would go down, and the media would hail Obama as the conquering hero!  Every news source would scream that the economy was saved because unemployment had gone down a percentage point. The reason is that some people's Government Unemployment Benefits would run out and they'd drop from U3 into U6!

Though the "Official" Unemployment Rate went down, what is known as "Strife" has gone up as it means that someone who would otherwise be working, or at the very least be receiving money to feed an empty belly, now are not. In my opinion the situation we're seeing out there right now is actually worse than if the number of jobs opening up were struggling, but were still opening. Last month (February) this exact situation occurred! Unemployment went down (U3), U6 went up but was not reported, and the media was shouting "Recovery!"

Recovery my ass.

U3 is a fraud. It's used for political purposes only. The real unemployment rate is closer to 20%. Current U6 is 15.9%.
