Anyone do this on occasion for there daily driver?

I'm thinking about trying it out to extend oil change intervals and to check for signs of anything bad going on.

I've done it on a used vehicle I just bought, mostly to see if there were any hidden "gotchas".

It's kind of a pricey way of extending oil change intervals on a vehicle that only holds 5 or 6 quarts - What you save in oil and filters is more than offset by what you pay for the analysis... Naturally, on a large diesel, the numbers make a lot more sense.

I do it for all my vehicles...

Just pay the extra for the TBN to see how your oil is holding up...then adjust accordingly...

For diesels that hold 12 gallons of oil, it makes sense. For a car, you have too much free time.

Or you could just extended oil change intervals without testing it and not worry about "anything bad going on".

Modern engine oil is unbelievably resilient.

What about filters? Can they continue to filter beyond 3,000 miles?

I run Mobil Drive Clean 5000 5w30 in my engine.

TBN Total Base Number)

The quantity of acid, expressed in terms of the equivalent number of milligrams (mg) of Potasium Hydroxide, that is required to titrat the strong base constituents present in 1 gram (g) of oil sample. (ASTM Method D 644 or D 974).

Basically, it means, when it gets below one...your oil is worn out....

I've seen a bunch of UOA's from both.  UOA's don't lie.

yep i run synthetic with no fancy tests every 4500 miles and my cars have run well into the 200k range.  I even have a taurus that is pushing 150k which is a fucking miracle.

I've been thinking about going over to synthetic but, I'm at 139,000 miles and i change every 3months or 3,000 miles.

I would like to go over to a synthetic blend.

Send in your oil for analysis and see how you are doing...if things are well..you are golden...

On a side note...when did you last change your tranny oil?

You are in front of the curve... synthetic or OEM fill?  Either one, you are doing better than 99% of car owners....your car will treat you well....:-)

Just regular Syncromesh. Changed it once before at 70,000 miles.

T-case fluid was changed last summer as well.

You guys are so fixated on the engine oil and tranny fluid you're forgetting another important thing, rear end lube. That's the last place you want any unnecessary friction.

Yep, I run extended change intervals (last oil was in for just short of 40K miles) in my Cummins diesel. I have a by pass filter and run full synthetic and have a sump capacity of 3 gallons.

If it is your daily driver that you are gonna change the oil every 3-5k dont worry about analysis unless you need the warm fuzzy feeling that it give you.

I use OAI labs for mine, cost is like 21bucks which included the tests (including Total Base Number) and shipping.

As for filters I change my Full Flow filter every 5-7k and my by pass when the flow is significately dimished (aprox 20k).

I thought the oil analysis looks for trace metals from bearings, rings, etc in order to give advance notice of an impending engine failure so that it can be rebuilt inexpensively before failure.

For $40000 heavy equipment engines, it makes sense.

If you are paying for oil analysis and don't have an oil pressure gauge installed........well, not so bright.

it also shows how the additive package is holding up, how the base stock is holding up, if there is fuel, water, soot (in the case of a diesel), checks for other contaminents (like silcon ie sand and grit),how the viscosity is holding up and a bunch of other stuff.

Waste of time and money for a daily driver/grocery getter.

If a motor is built correctly, and once it gets broken in, there is negligible wear if you don't run the shit out it and change oil and air filters on a schedule.

I have been changing oil on my vehicles around 7000 miles. Air filters every 20,000
